Help upgrading my system
I got this system almost 2 years ago, here is a link to the page I bought it from.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227572

I have heard I should probably upgrade my graphics card but have no idea where to begin and I don't know about the compatability either.

Can you find a better 600W 80 Plus Bronze for $35 though? Or is it worth the price?

For now just worry about upgrading your GPU and that you may also require a new PSU to run a better GPU. Here's my advice for around $200~ after rebates:

PowerColor Radeon R9 380 4GB PCS+ Video Card
Corsair Builder 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/pdDmzy
Base Total: $249.98
Promo Discounts: -$5.00
Mail-in Rebates: -$40.00
Total: $204.98

You'll have to make sure your case will fit that. If you already have a 500W PSU with at least two 6 or 6+2 pin PCIe connectors you can skip the PSU upgrade.

The R9 380 is probably over 5 times better than your current GT 640.

Wow that would be an improvement.
My Power Supply is ATX 400W Switching Power Supply Model SL-F400

Actually I won't ever find a PSU that cheap if you insist, cuz I like my PC too much and the rest of the house for that matter.

That's why I advised the OP to have more on his budget for at least a half decent upgrade.

Ya you can't get a R9 380 running on that I don't think, 500W minimum and 2 6 or 6+2 plugs.

So new power supply now and save for a new graphics card?
Rove Apr 20, 2016 @ 8:56pm
Well you could get both for $205 after reabtes or $210 if you went with EVGA instead of Corsair on the PSu. So hopefully would not need to save long?

Ya though there is no point getting the GPU first so might as well grab the PSU first.

yes, pick one from here

http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/power-supply/#W=600,1600&e=2,3,4,5,6&m=11,14,39,51,52,63,71&sort=a9&page=1

and a 960 or r9 380+
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#sort=a8&page=1&c=208,186,185,224,310,311,312
2g on those is fine, 4g will not make them any faster

If I used this combo would I have to do anything special switching to raedon besides uninstall and install some software. Also is there anything I would need to check first to make sure they fit?

The video card is good, but the Corsair CX has high failure rates.

That should be just fine but I think the R9 380 is a better card plus there was a 4GB model for the price of that GTX 960. So I'd still recommend what I recommended.
