Computer suddenly not able to run games (extreme lag)
Hello,

I have an Omen 15 laptop and here are my specs
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4710HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz
16 GB Ram
64-bit operating system, x64 based processor
Nividia Geforce 860 4 gig
Windows 10

I have been able to run all of my games flawlessly, battlefront, civ 5, ck2, total war, ect. for as long as I've had this laptop. About 4 days ago my laptop has started lagging on all those games (and some other programs, even sometimes the internet) to the point where the games are completely unplayable. I've restarted my computer, I've updated my computer, I've reinstalled my old drivers, I've defragmented my computer, I've ran multple full system sweeps (Macafee and Windows security), I've turned off my virus protection, I've went into the task manager and closed background apps (though not that many because I'm not sure what all of them do)... all to no avail. My computer still can't run games at all. Additionally I set my memory allocation for the virtual memory paging file off of automatic and to the recommended level for my computer. I've also reset my computer back with that time machine feature thing to before I was having any problems.

I've installed "SpeedFan" to check my temps, and it is running at 40-45C at ideal (2-5% CPU Usage) and it doesn't go up much when running my games (below 50C).

All in all I am extremely frustrated and I was wondering what you could suggest I do to fix this problem and get my computer back to normal.

First Advice
Get rid of speedfan, it SUCKS
Use HWMonitor instead

Default the Pagefile, it has no effect on your problems, best to leave it alone.

Main thing to do if its a GPU issue is to do a CLEAN Install of the GPU drivers using DDU
Uninstalling ALL NVIDIA products first, clean install with DDU.

Download the latest NVIDIA drivers for your system first before you use DDU
Custom Install the drivers ONLY installing the Drivers and PhysX, NOTHING ELSE, not even GFE.

And go from there.

Could be a bad disk drive. Try cloning to a new drive and see if that fixes anything.

Thank you for the speedy reply. What is DDU?

Also, everytime I install Nividia I do the "clean install" option, though I am using the GFE program to do it.

I will uninstall everything and reinstall it and give an update on how it is operating afterwards. Thanks again!

Can you reset the BIOS on a laptop? If so you should try that. If all else fails, back that puppy up (literally back up all your files) and do a full system wipe on that bi**h

What I mean was can you reset bios manually (rip laptop apart), but you should be able to do it through the computer interface itself (F12 or whatever on boot up). Google it to find exactly how.

DDU is Display Driver Uninstaller.

Chances are its an issue with the driver, or the games for whatever reason are using the Intel iGPU instead of the NVIDIA.

Main thing to do is to make sure Windows Power settings are set to Performance, if that doesnt work set NVIDIA to Performance mode.

I'd avoid using GFE as it can cause problems on its own, thats why i recommend only installing the driver and PhysX via Custom Install.

Also, Clean Install via the NVIDIA Drivers doesnt actually do a clean install like i'm suggesting, it only defaults the settings in the control panel, nothing more.

So far I am still having all the same problems, and I've done all the recommended procedures. I initiated an HP support. Hopefully they will think of something.

Thank you for all the help, and please feel free to let me know if you think of anything else!

Did you install the Windows anniversary update recently? You would need to reinstall all your drivers after that.
Zeddiclease 23 AGO 2016 a las 3:10 p. m.
I did, but since then I have reinstalled all my drivers anyway.

Run "resmon" and look for processes that are chewing up cpu or disk.

When performance suddenly changes it is almost always because software has been installed or config has been changed. Resmon should identify the culprit if it is software.

Make sure power settings are still on max.

Thanks!
I ran it and it says my cpu is only at +/-10% at most and averaging around 5% so there isn't really anything that is eating it up that much (this is with chrome, edge, word, mail, steam and support assistant up as well)

I normally keep everything but one program running when I'm playing a game, but since I've been trouble shooting I have it all up.

Windows10 is doing a ton of crapware updates, boging your internet and system.
Run Task mam. I had 24% of memory being used with nothing running. I no longer log in as admin (because MS-live) so dont know what W10 is doing but I ended the top few windows service tasks prefetch (& yet again uninstalled the same fing apps over and over and over again)

Its windows10 thats whats wrong, best i can say is deleate any crap MS-apps, wait till the full MS-undate is done, it could take a while. reboot.

You were exactly right, my computers problems pretty much resolved themselves after all of the updates finished.

Thank you all for your help!
