5.1 sound in games with realtek hd problem
Have an old Sven Ihoo MT5.1 speaker set which I recently decided to hook up to my MSI GT70 20C laptop via standard rca-cables-to-3-jack-connectors scheme. So 5.1 sound (dolby,dts,ac3 whatever) works as it should in movies with subwoofer reproducing low frequencies only. However, in games (namely Rage, Hitman Absolution), although I do get a correct surround sound positioning, and while the sub does provide the low-end as it should it also annoyingly reproduces ambient sounds, dialogue etc. So I guess games use some other audio signal processing which leads to this. I can't mitigate this by setting the crossover frequency, 'cause it's a crappy subwoofer with no settings of its own and Realtek doesn't seem to have this option either (I tried changing the 'frequency_cut' value via regedit and it didn't seem to have any effect). Swapping center/subwoofer makes things worse. Updating Realtek drivers screwed up my speaker configuration (rear speakers become identified as side speakers for some reason) so I backed-up to the version which came with the laptop (6.0.1.6873 dd. 29.03.2013).

It's no big deal, since I plan to mostly use speakers for movies anyway. But if there's a simple way to mitigate this, advice would be much appreciated.

Please try the most recent Official Realtek HD Audio Drivers from their site.

Yes it will wipe the previous audio settings, that is normal when changing drivers.
However you should have options for "Detect plugged in connection and show on-screen" and then u have option to tell the software what that is. After updating the drivers and rebooting, ensure to set the Windows Playback > Speakers config back to 5.1 again, as on default is most likely 2.1 / Stereo.

Then try the Equalizer and adjust so the Sub is not producing so much of the mid-range frequencies.

You can also try Razer Synapse w/ Surround and see what you can do with that; as this software works with virtually any Speakers/Headphone setups.

Sometimes the audio recording for things doesn't work well when you mess with the audio settings.
Thank you for responses! So yeah, while waiting for the comments here I messed with Realtek drivers and basically tried everything Bad-Motha advises, but the problem remained. My solution was (if anyone with the same problem is interested) to buy creative external 5.1 sound card, which has "Enable bass" and "Subwoofer Gain" options accessible via its "Audio control panel" - enabling these when playing games, apart from boosting subwoofer level (which I can then simply lower by turning the volume knob on the sub itself), eliminates unwanted sound in the sub.
p.s. Creative didn't pay me for the plug! I guess any decent sound card, other than the standard laptop-integrated one, would have similar options.

i've noticed that Win10 Realtek drivers are different than Win7 drivers for my motherboard regarding speaker placement.

For example
The Win7 drivers showed everything correctly for my 5.1 speakers
But for Win10, i have to put the rear speakers into the side speakers port otherwise i have to choose 7.1 even though the board is 5.1 and Then the speakers get the proper sound, but i have to disable the Side speakers as i dont have them.

i dunno, its weird..
You don't need Other sound card. Realtek HD does everything those can do, just need to configure it properly. If u want the Subwoofer to have better lows and not so much mids, then adjust the equalizer accordingly so audio overall sounds better on your Speakers or Headphones. A USB SoundBlaster won't be any better really.
