Hardware determines performance.
It's the hardware inside that determines performance.
The specific model GT80 Titan SLI from MSI is simply that... A model. It has hardware inside. You can get the same hardware from Alienware offerings.
Again, branding does not determine performance.
That is dependent on model design, not branding.
One specific brand could release one laptop with horrible cooling, but release another one with good cooling.
It is true for all products. Falling victim to branding and fanboyism is never good.
There are far more high end, enthusiast grade laptop manufacturers than the AW and MSI.
You should head over to XoticPC, they will have all of the options available at very good prices.
I would look heavily into Sager/Clevo machines, as they tend to have the most/best price/performance ratio, but not all the bells and whistles as the MSI/AW.
Focus less on brands and more on hardware. Look for anything i7 (Desktop CPU if you can), however much RAM you need, and try to get something like a GTX 970M, or GTX 980M. They both overclock very well, I've personally pushed the GTX 970M to 1400Mhz on the core and +600Mhz on the memory clock with a +75mV increase on the Vcc.
And yes, the GTX 960M should be able to play 90% of games on high settings.
Are you suggesting to try to find laptop with desktop i7? Are you joking?
Of course I'm not joking, if it's in his budget he can get i7-6700K/Xeon based machines all day long. My D900F had an i7-990X Six core CPU. You can even get an 12/16-Core Xeon chip in the new ones if you don't want the Unlocked i7's. In addition to 64GB's of DDR4.
Not sure which machines you've had, but me and many others have never had any sort of a bad experience with Sager/Clevo.
This was the Panther 4 from a few years ago. As you can see, EVERYTHING is upgradable.
