Has anybody upgraded an MSI GT80 TITAN? :: Hardware and Operating Systems

What do you want to upgrade?

Pretty much every component in a modern Enthusiast laptop is upgradable.
CPU, RAM, HDD's, GPUS, etc.

There is currently no higher end mobile solution than the 980 Desktop Mobiles in SLI. You probably wont see the 1080 Desktop Mobiles for another few months.

You realize two 980 desktop mobiles score over P33K in 3DMARK11 right? I mean, that's probably in the top 1 percentile at stock. I've seen people score about 20-30% OC without vBIOS mod on them too.

No, because it's not possible. The GT80 (and others) don't use desktop cards inside them.

No, they don't. No idea what makes you think they do, but they most assuredly don't. The cards the laptops use are not the same as a desktop card. They are a different size, and do not use a standard PCIe slot. You can't take one out and replace it with a much larger desktop card with a different interface.

Sorry but you're the one making a fool of yourself. The GT80, like any other notebook or laptop, can not be upgraded with desktop parts. MSI indicated they may offer specific upgrade options for the GT80 in the future, but info on that is scarce. And if they do, they will only be available from MSI and specific to that one laptop model. You simply can't put a random desktop card in there.

Sorry but you're the one making a fool of yourself. The GT80, like any other notebook or laptop, can not be upgraded with desktop parts. And that's what i was asking. I read that you could, some touting that it is fully upgradable, so I asked in sort of a double question if anybody has done so.

There are laptops with a proper GTX 980 (not the weaker 980M) in them, but they are not in the physical form of a PCIe card like the desktop version. You can't just drop a whole desktop graphics card in there, it won't fit.

If the laptop in question uses an MXM graphics card, it can be removed, replaced or possibly upgraded. But you can't just put anything in there and expect it to work.

There is a photograph of a GTX 980 laptop card. Does that look like a desktop card? No, it doesn't. Because it's not a desktop card. That is what's in a GT80 or GX600. Not a desktop card.

I still have no idea what ever gave you the idea the GT80 has a desktop card in it. You can get the GT80 with GTX 980 SLI. Two desktop cards will obviously not fit into that case.

I assume Nvidia make the cards (or a subcontractor). The GTX 1080 for laptops should come out in the coming months, but no idea when. I've seen published specs on the 1070, so I'm guessing it's about to come out. Barring some kind of compatibility problem (which seems unlikely, but you never know), the new ones should drop right into an existing GT80.

Good point. Hopefully they will come out with those cards throughout now. Just curious because I'm new to PC gaming, and mainly play fighting games so the power I won't really need. Even though I will overkill when I build my own in the future.

The people on these computer forums are usually dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to laptop hardware. The only place you will get quality answers from other Mobile Enthusiasts is NBR. If I told them I'd overclocked an 11" Netbook with a 3920XM to over 4.5Ghz, and overvolted / doubled the GPU clock their heads would explode.

It's no sense arguing with them, as they usually have no idea what they are talking about.

Most people are not aware that all the tests at CES to show off Pascal were actually done on two Mobile GPU's in SLI.

Anyways, MSI sometimes uses slightly off reference MXM designs in their machines. The slot it the same, just a standard MXM 3.0B module, but the PCB demensions are sometimes non standard. USUALLY you have three years worth of upgrades for any GPU is available in MXM 3.0B. Eurocom usually guarantees atleast 3 years of GPU upgrades.
