If your monitor has DP (DisplayPort) socket then better to just get a DP cable.
HDMI is not going to do it.
This is not always a cable limitation, but how the Monitor was designed.
Most Displays designed with an HDMI 2.0 port on them are not made to do above 60-75Hz over that HDMI port. And require either DVI-D or DP to do the 120+ Hz.
Anyway, best to use DisplayPort or DVI-D if you want higher Hz rates. Monitor & GPU (also GPUs video port you want to use) all must be compatible with the Resolution & Hz rate you desire to get it easily.
Always check the manufacturers information before purchasing or attempting specific things.
Everything is 144hz, my monitor is 3-4 years old so should have a hdmi port which gives 144hz.
I was looking at getting some adaptors but i can't find any which are 144hz. Should i get a cable which is both hdmi and VGA/ DVI? or should i get an adaptor which slots into hdmi with a VGA/DVI connector on the otherside?
No. Most Monitors never support it like that. Look at the specs page for your exact monitor. It most likely states that use of DP is required for 144hz
