What do you think about this new GTX 1060 3gb?

First, excuse for my poor English.
Now then, is it worth a pick for budget 1080p or 30FPS 2K DSR GPU build? I decide to replace my old 750ti, still impressed with this card but it starting to aged since The Division ..

What would happen to our game if we're out of VRAM? Because honestly, up until now I'm playing GTA V with 2GB 750ti in all Maxed and On Settings 1080p (minus MSAA and Advanced Graphic Settings) and still get average of 35FPS. It ate 2,6gb of VRAM but I didn't get any bad performance worthy of notice (except of fps drops for a secs in a sudden crowded scene).

How long will this 3GB card last me, mainly for Ultra 1080p gaming?

Sadly, I can't afford 6GB version of GTX 1060 this year, since I'm also planning to get 250GB SSD and really want to pre-order Steep from Store .. and yeah 'college student $ management'.

My other specs :
i5-4690k
8GB RAM
500GB HDD

Some games at 1080 use more than 3 GB VRAM, this card is pointless for gaming IMO.

I would get a 960 4gb ssc version or a 980 4gb sc or ssc over a 1060 3gb clocked at reference speeds at the prices you are looking at or strongly advise saving up for a 6gb 1060.(remember holiday prices/sale are coming soon)

3gb is exceeded in many games. Referring back to GTAV I have a 980 SC and I go over 4gb when turning up the sliders in advanced gfx settings and turning up AA. I can run fxaa or 2xmsaa or 2xmfaa while running with advanced settings turned up a 1/4 way on each. I do run at 60fps though and it will look the world of difference to you playing at 35. Realize other games use little vram and there are others like far cry 4 and the division that use a ton. Also even if you have a 1080p monitor with an nvidia card you can use DSR to render 1440p on your 1080p screen and it looks amazing. the less vram you have the less chance on you being able to do this with a game or pobably any game and keep a decent frame rate

Games don't use any specific amount of VRAM. Situation exactly the same as with main RAM - if you have a lof of memory, application can use more RAM. In any case, you can run any modrrn game at 1080 res and highest possible quality on 3 GB graphic card.

The textures the game is loading are stored in VRAM. The size of the textures, among other things, determines how much VRAM will be needed.

And if you do not have as much as the program is requesting, then it will store the data in slower ways, such as on system RAM. This will cause the game to slow down a lot.

Of course you can, but on some games you can run out of VRAM and your game will chug.

Furthermore, as the quality of textures improves in the future, VRAM requirements are only going to get larger.

Really? Can you give a link to benchmark @1080 which can prove that?
Spend the extra money to buy a gtx 1060 that hasn't been purposefully gimped to make you want to upgrade a year later. Yes Vram does matter and there will be scenarios even in current AAA games with high settings where you will experience game stutter (as the limited vram storage has to be deleted and rewritten over to draw up the next frame) which is worse then slightly lower but steady framerates.

However I would not do as someone above said and get the 960 4gb card, it's perhaps the only other gpu nvidia sells that is a worse value then this. Between the 950 at the low end and the 1060 6gb Nvidia at the moment has nothing I'd recommend.

If 200 dollars is all you can manage and nvidia is what you want then get the 3gb card, but configue your game settings to keep your texture quality lowered and don't use MSAA.

Shadows of Mordor already uses more than 3GB RAM in 1080p resolution. Why should someone buy a gimped down 1080 that can't even run current games properly? GTA V is hardly a good example considering it requires a Geforce 9 to run.

it should be the 1050 instead of a 1060 3g
the 1060 6g is a completely different gpu
3GB VRAM would be a downgrade; get 6GB minimum
There is only small difference in pricing between the 1060 3GB vs 6GB
6GB can be found for around $249 (the Zotac Mini 1060)

It would be like using a 980 or 980 Ti with only 3GB VRAM, makes no sense for them to have even released it at all.

Even gtx750ti is still fine with 2gb vram. Can run most, if not all games as long as you turn down the texture quality. A 3gb gtx1060 is a very good upgrade for the price (or it will be when the demand drops, currently out of stock in most shops and overpriced as a result).

Well here in UK at least the price difference between 3gb and 6gb version is ~£45. So if the 3gb version is only ~10% slower then it's totally worth it. Specially for budget/low end gaming pc's. But at the moment both 3gb and 6gb versions are not worth buying because of high demand and low stock. When the prices drop it will fully replace gtx750ti/gtx950 which are still the best budget gpus for the price.

Here is an actual benchmark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1RWItff0eQ
In quintessence there is not much difference in most games tested. But I still think it's a waste
of money to buy a new 3GB card seeing games get more hungry for VRAM fast.
If you are in for saving money buy a used 3 GB card.
don't get it must be really bad even 6gb gtx 1060 can't max out games at stable 60 fps, i'm disappointed.

Max out games with a gtx1060 ? Do you even realise it's meant to be a mid range gpu ? Also even top end gpu's such as gtx1080 can't max out games either...
