MSI GE70 Apache Pro, only loads into BIOS
I purchased a new laptop and gave the old one to my dad as a present. Well i reloaded everything to factory settings and shipped it off. When he got it, and turned it on the power button had a amber/orange light and their was no display on the laptop screen. (which i new was the laptop going to an external monitor). I had him hook up an external monitor and he said that it went straight to the bios, while in the bios it said their was no hard drive. For the heck of it i had him try to use a windows 10 dvd boot disk. The dvd room would spin and act like it wanted to load but then just kick the computer back into the bios. To me this sounds like a bad hard drive and i would get him a new one, but would a bad hard drive, make the laptop only use the nvida instean of the intel hd chipset? just seems weird to me. Anyone have any input or suggestions.

BTW this is a MSI GE70 Apache pro.

We have tried the remove battery for 5mins and hold the power button to clear the cach, also tried the F11 while booting and we are getting nothing.

Sounds like you're trying to help him out over a phone or something. If he's not that technical proficient, the best option is to have it return to MSI if it's still under warranty.

Yes i am doing this over the phone, he is technical infact he has a A+ cert and various C++ and java. The problem is that his technical expertese is out of date with the new hardware and how it communicates, but still good enough to get good feed back. The warranty expired about a month ago. I would have him send it back but that would be about 60 dollars probably the same price as to take it into geek squad. I think i have narrowed it down to either a bad hard drive or a corrupt bios. Both things he has the knowledge to fix. Im just trying to see if there are any other things i could try first.

Does he have a ubuntu live dvd/flash drive or know how to make one? If a livedisk could boot up and get you into a linux operating system then it's likely the HDD. If not then it could be a bad bios or some hardware failure.

Okay ill give that a go thanks :), im pretty sure its the HD, just seems wierd that it would cause the laptop to only display on a external display.

unplug usb devices and try again

or set the boot order in bios to its hdd/ssd first

If there is no hard drive showing up in the BIOS, then either the cable to the hard drive became loose during shipping or the drive is dead. Have a look at the hard drive connection first.
