if you really want upgrade, use windows media creation tool
however, performance will be such that you will want to return to W7
this PC optimal for win XP or Linux, W7SP1 is top OS for it
https://support.microsoft.com/help/15090/windows-7-install-service-pack-1-sp1
Check if you can get Windows 10 drivers for your hardware... in this case, your PC might not natively support it?
http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Pavilion-Slimline-s5000-Desktop-PC-series/4269980/model/4295655
Just understand Windows 10 will try to update them but might break support for certain unknown devices in that case. Check about your network card, DVD drive, etc. See what others have encountered already during the upgrade. Prepare or at least know how to patch these.
Next - if the automatic updating still fails, consider manually downloading Win 10 and using the Media Creation Tool to burn a copy of the ISO onto a DVD (or just use a thumb drive).
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
If you have automatically upgraded and it breaks something:
Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Roll back to Windows 7
At least your Win 7 CD Key will be digitally entitled to try again (so long you upgraded before 29th July 2016).
Media Creation Tool is stuck on "Getting Updates" probably because its also stuck in Windows Update
My computer already has SP1
Unfortunately I don't have my USB at the moment.
Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant Compatibility Report says my PC meets all the requirements to upgrade to Windows 10.
I am not or have ever been a computer expert and I have no idea whats happenning and whats preventing me from upgrading.
Thx!
Note: This folder may be hidden by default. You need to make them visible first using the folder options. On Windows 7, you simply click organize > folder and search options, switch to View, and select "show hidden files, folders and drives".
Right-click the folder "$Windows.~WS" and check properties. See it's size. If the size keeps on growing, leave it for a while and come back later, it's busy downloading the Operating System. This can be 4GB in size, so on a slow connection might take a long time (even overnight, etc).
If it's truely stuck, open C:\$Windows.~WS\Sources\Windows\sources on the system and locate the file setupprep.exe. When you start it, the process will resume the last operation instead of starting completely anew.
If that fails...
Download CCleaner (free version): https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
Run a clean to get rid of temporary files. This should then get rid of the possible corrupted installation, letting you start off from the beginning to download it all again.
I successfully unhid the file and procceeded to try and find "setupprep.exe" but instead of Windows folder, its was called Panther. So like this:
C:/$Windows.~WS\Sources\Panther
and the word Panther is in blue. Inside the folder, everything is also blue, but there is no "setupprep.exe"!
Does this mean I run CCleaner?
Thx!
If your pc now is having issues, easiest way is to go out and buy a 16gb usb 3.0 thumb drive and use media creation tool. You really don't want to "upgrade" anyways, you should do a clean install from the iso on the thumb drive you make using the tool. I think you can even download it from a different computer if you have access to one, because you select the OS and 32 or 64 build when before it builds the iso, It's generic. I have no idea how to fix your problem though if you want to continue to try upgrading instead. I'm no pc expert by any means and I just did this all literally 5 days ago, biggest problem was just taking the time to back up everything before getting started because it will wipe your HD clean.
The "Panther" directory for Windows is where in holds the upgrades to install. If it's empty, then it either hasn't downloaded anything yet, already been cleaned out, or has finished and onto the next step.
If you performed an upgrade installation of Windows the Panther folder can easily fill up multiple gigabytes. I was hoping it would be corrupted or hung half way there, so you could try resume or clear it out. However, since it's already empty, that won't help.
I own a 16GB 2.0 USB that I don't really have right now. Im not sure if it makes a difference if its 2.0 or 3.0, but I guess I could use my extras (all 2.0)
Because I have no knowledge of this update I cant differenciate between a "Clean Install" and the Install I use (Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant/Media Creation Tool)
I don't own any other Windows computers that still work so I can't get it from another PC
Just saying I have a 64 bit build btw
The "Panther" directory isn't empty, and sports these files:
-diagerr
-diagrwn
-DITel-Merge.etl
-Eula
-setupact
-setuperr
-windlp.state
-windlp.state-old

And choose download tool now. Back up all your files from your hard drive(s) before going any further after you download.
Open up and select " create install media for another pc...". Do NOT select upgrade my pc.
Then you have to have your usb drive and select the right architecture( the use recommended should detect your pc if you dont know.....then select usb after it is pulgged in and detected.
Did you do any of this already? I'm assuming not since you dont have your flash drive. Let me know if you get through this step and we'll go the rest of the way.
Alternatively you can use the WU offline tool (http://download.wsusoffline.net/) though it will probably download like 3 gigs of updates ahead.
That is an unoffical website to grab updates from... considering Microsoft offers them in both automatic/manual downloads anyways, I question why?
While it's not blacklisted, it refers to a blacklisted domain under "refs.html".

^Scroll down to 'Download Tool Now'
I know right, stop trying to follow complicated instructions and guesswork. who knows if youll ever get windows 10 by doing it the hardest way possible. Just go get your thumb drive already from wherever it is.
