It's a calculation of: Screen resolution <> Monitor size <> Viewing distance
At the standard viewing distance of 3 feet, optimal retina display would be:
1080p resolution - 19 to 24 inch monitor (max 27 inches)
1440p resolution - 27 to 32 inch monitor (max 36 inches)
UltraHD 4K resolution - at least 32 inches
- 24 inch
- 1080p FullHD resolution (1920x1080)
- Refresh rate of 60Hz or higher
- Response rate of 5ms or lower
- Max input lag time: 30ms
- LED Backlit or Low Blue Backlit
- IPS Panel (Richer, brighter, and more viewing angle compared to TN, but can be a bit more expensive - TN on the other hand can be faster response)
- G-SYNC (optional: Costs more, but will allow for syncing of the Nviida graphics card to monitor output)

You might wish to save up more...
Consider that you probably use the PC on a daily basis for hours on end. Your monitor, keyboard, and mouse are quite easily overlooked but should last you at least 5-7 years. Getting a good quality monitor, not only acts better and lasts longer (unless you just put up with it), but also protects your eye sight, etc.
You will notice a huge difference going up to FullHD. After that you might even want to consider upgrading the graphics card, but that can be done later down the track.
