i5 6600k vs i7 6700k
As the title says. Is an i7 worth the extra $100 for professional use of Unreal Engine, and rendering in 3ds Max & Carrara? Budget is a factor, I would like to keep the cost as low as possible without sacrificing too much performance. Yes, I will be overclocking, i just want to know what cpu would perform better for 3d modeling and rendering – i5 or i7?

i5's are for gaming, the i7's are for gaming, game recording, editing (video/photo) and many other things.

2 main reasons to go for the i7-K over the i5-K models.
Content creation/development. If you are creating content, video, high resolution Photoshop, CAD, running multiple virtual machines, streaming twitch/YouTube.
You want 4+GHz but don't want to tinker with settings. Out of the box both the 4th gen and 6th gen i7-K models are already stock up at 4GHz and beyond with boost. You don't even need a more expensive "Z" motherboard if you have a huge aversion to overclock tinkering. This is a good route for people without the time or patience to overclock, but still have enough funds for the "best".

I had similar question so i will post it here, what performance/fps difference would be the in the stock i5-6500 vs OCed i5-6600k 4.5ghz.

more threads larger cache doubt you'd actually be able to see the difference exept in benchmarks the big differences in the older CPU's arn't there anymore get some faster ram

i7 6700k is the same as the i5 CPU, but also has hyperthreading.

The CPU has 4 physical cores (rooms).

The i5 has a single thread (door) per core (room).

The i7 hyperthreading allows for stacked threads (2 doors) per core (room).

So if the CPU core is only halve used for a process, it can stack another on it at the same time. Maxing it's utilization more.

Short answer:
i5 CPU is optimal for gaming performance

i7 CPU would be better for multitasking, raw data processing, image/media, and still does well with gaming.

Is an i7 worth the extra $100 for professional use of Unreal Engine, and rendering in 3ds Max & Carrara? YES, applications like that would benefit off an i7 CPU. Something taking 5 minutes to render, could be reduced to 3 minutes by the hyperthread stacks (that then adds up when you are spending a few hours to render something). Also, 16GB of RAM would be helpful.

yea i consider 16gb ram a minimum for todays current gaming system. 5 years ago 8gb ram was fine, today? na.
