is a 700w power supply good for a gtx 1080 or 1070?

If it is from a major brand with at least 80+bronze rating you should be alright.

The card's max power consumption is 225W because it gets 150W from the 8pin and 75W from the pcie slot, but typically only consumes 180W.

Go to specs than view full specs.

They recommend a 500W power supply. You want a quality 500W minimum power supply not a cheap 500W minimum power supply.

Something like this would be perfect and you can see the different wattage options.

EVGA in my opinion make some of the best power supplies, but there are other great brands like Corsair(just avoid their CX models).

a quality 500-550w is plenty
Don't get those bronze ones; get a GOOD one.
And I would also avoid ones that do not offer 2x 6+2pin PCIE connectors, minimum
