It's called Virtual Surround
7.1 is pointless; both games and apps never support beyond 5.1
headsets general are 2 speaker w/ virtual surround
software takes the game/movie original 5.1 channels and allows that to be pushed to 2-channel
You'll be able to simulate 5.1 or 7.1 surround. This surround simulation can be done with any stereo headset and is not a specific feature.
If you are looking for a true 7.1 or 5.1 surround headset... then you are looking at the wrong headset. You'll need to actually look at the headset specifications for physical speakers.
I know that it only simulate 7.1. I think a real 7.1 headset is expensive as ♥♥♥♥. I dont wanna go over 100 bucks.
If the source audio (BF4) outputs 5.1 and your sound driver is simulating 7.1, then it just won't have the extra left and right audio to fill.
Worse case... if you get any odd audio bugs, you simply switch it to 5.1... or stereo... no biggie.
Your sound card, or rather the software, is doing the simulation. Not the game.
It's done via Software
