I would suggest above a GTX 970 though; GTX 980 Ti and GTX 1070 are around the 400-500 $ ranges.
And you'll want at least a quad core i5 class; minimum
and 16GB RAM
You can that above Steam VR Test on basically any machine; it will tell you where your current specs stand.
Other choices include: 290series, 390series, Fury series, gtx 970 and above, titan x. All of them start at around $250 or higher new. Some of them perform worse than 480 as well since they weren't originally specced for dx12 and vr.
You generally want 8gb or higher vram, since vr is essentially 2 high res monitors, one for each eye.
