I'm thinking of running an oculus rift on my PC.

Oculus Rift or HTC Vive then these are the minimum requirements:

I would suggest above a GTX 970 though; GTX 980 Ti and GTX 1070 are around the 400-500 $ ranges.

And you'll want at least a quad core i5 class; minimum
and 16GB RAM

You can that above Steam VR Test on basically any machine; it will tell you where your current specs stand.

I asking about your computer's hardware specifications, you would still need the required hardware power to run specfic Virtual Reality products.

Yes please post the CPU-Z validation I suggested; or we can't help without more hardware spec info of your system.

Rx480 is the cheapest vr capable gpu at $200, but comes out at the 29th.

Other choices include: 290series, 390series, Fury series, gtx 970 and above, titan x. All of them start at around $250 or higher new. Some of them perform worse than 480 as well since they weren't originally specced for dx12 and vr.

You generally want 8gb or higher vram, since vr is essentially 2 high res monitors, one for each eye.

6 - 8GB VRAM for VR will do fine.
