Which GPU is still effective?
I'm looking at desktops(Travel a lot, so dekstop is out of the question.), and I see one with a GTX 980M 8GB, and one with a GTX 980M SLi, but more a much more hefty price tag.

Question being: Should I go with a regular 980M or fork out extra for the SLi. I'm looking to play games coming out this year like Mafia 3, Dishonored 2, Dead Rising 4, BF1, etc., on High 60FPS.

What are the models of these two laptops anyway? I guess if you can afford the 980m sli laptop and don't mind the price difference then I would go with that one. But a single 980m is good too since not all games support or scale well with sli.

One is an MSI G-219, and one is the MSI GT80. Price is important to me, but I just need a laptop to run future games for the next year at least. It's an almpst $1000 price difference, so I want to save myslef some money. It's just the question if I need to fork out that much more.

A single 980m will definately last more than just one year. If it were me I would go with the MSI G-219 just because sli does not always scale well and if the game does not have a profile for it may only use 1GPU.

That's good. So the 980M paired with an i7-6820HK 2.7 Ghz could run games on high for 60FPS? Atleast, Mafia 3 and Dead Rising 4 maybe.

You should be good if you are playing these games at 1080p or 1440p

Yea, it would be 1080p. I would assume this GPU could do high since it's better than a desktop 960, but less powerful than a 970.
I was trying fo find benchmarks and then I realized the games were not out lol. But this site may help. You are going to see high frame rate for sure though.

Wow, even runs Just Cause 3 at 60 on Ultra. And I saw a video that ran Battlefront on ultra with 80 FPS. Single 980M it is! Thank you for saving me $1000

Crysis 3 43 FPS average. Crysis 3 is like one of the games you look at if you want to try and get a sense of the worst case scenario.

Yeah, that SLI would not benefit you much when gaming anyway
If you afford to, get a Laptop that has the full Desktop GTX 980 in it.
Much more powerful then any 980M config. Avoid SLI

Make sure has a good SSD & HDD as well.

The problem with that is it's $700 more.
The Laptops are always behind the current games. Sometimes even Desktop users have to wait for what GPUs are within reach in the coming months to get their games performing how they want.

Best bet really is, unless you must have a Laptop for portability reasons, build a Desktop.
Your money will go alot further with a Desktop, and you can upgrade it beyond RAM and Drives.

If 980M SLI fits your budget, sure. But again, many games do not support, or have issues with SLI. So in some games that will mean turning off SLI and running off the single GPU.

Newer Intel Skylake Laptops will come this year with GTX 1070 or 1080; but they are not nearly ready just yet... many months away for those still. For those, a single 1070 or 1080 would be plenty of power; more so than any previous Mobile GPUs, even 980M SLI. NVIDIA is thinking about not doing cut-down Mobile GPUs anymore, instead making full Desktop spec'd versions that will fit in Laptops configs.

I'm probably not going to get SLI. I was just asking if a 980M could perform well on this year's games since the 980M is better than a 960, but a little behind the 970. And as I said, I travel a lot. So I don't feel like lugging around a desktop.
