Dota 2 low FPS
Let's start with my PC configuration:

1. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 (2.66 Ghz)
2. AMD Radeon HD4870 (1 GB GDDR5 RAM - 256 bit)
3. 8 GB DDR2 RAM (800 Mhz)
4. 500 GB Sata 2 HDD

So my FPS is usually around 45 with video settings of 95% (1680 x 1050 screen resolution). In team fights my FPS drops to 25. But if I set the settings at low (like 5%), FPS would remain almost the same (50 - 55 with 30 - 35 FPS in fights). I cant get it, shouldnt the difference be a little bit bigger between settings on high and low. Now I have the issue when my FPS is around 30, since yesterday.

combo of cpu and gpu

c2q is short on core performance compared to newer intel
4870 was a high end gpu, but now is weak for newer games

turn down aa/af and lower other settings til its playable

Well, I agree. But I think it should deliver stable 50 fps. My PC became laggy In last couple of weeks for many other things. I think Im gonna try to refresh my OS, maybe even with Windows 10.

do not install win10 on a very old build like that
win10 does not have proper chipset drivers for it

System is too old, only has 'legacy' driver support.

If you replaced the GPU with a newer one; the system would do just fine.

GTX 950 2GB or better sure would help. A sorely outdated GPU with only legacy driver support doesn't help you at all. It's time to retire that GPU or put it in a system for older games, like with WinXP for example.

Windows 10 is compatible with Windows 7 and 8 drivers. It isn’t a new platform which requires new drivers. So if all your hardware is working in Windows 7, you’ll be able to get it working in Windows 10. Btw, If I was gonna replace GPU, than I would have bottleneck with CPU and on and on... So the only solution is new PC (which I can not afford). But I'll have to do new OS anyway (7 or 10).

Win10 does not support your GPU, period. There is no point to put that on such old machine.

Your CPU is fine for newer GPUs, as long as they are not really high end ones, like GTX 980 for example.

Its your RAM speed, had that same problem but I was using DDR3 1333mhz which was downclocking to 980Mhz, once I set the ram speed to about 1280mhz. FPS came back to normal. This all happened after the Reborn update

if the FPS drop is recent, it could be due to thermal throttling.
check/clean your rig (fans: cpu, gpu, case) from dusts.

I noticed that my PC slowed down when I upgraded RAM a little bit. Problem was when I put 8 GB, but if I put less, it works normally. So I went to bios settings and reduced latency for all RAM modules, and now works perfectly fine. Now I get 60 - 70 FPS on lower settings (1680 x 1050, animate portrait on, additive light pass on, specular on, specular and light blooms on, high quality water on, texture on high, shadow medium and render quality 100%, other things are set to off). Btw I'll check temperatures, but I think they are fine.

Are you still using 8GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM? if so. what exact settings on latency did you change to make go smooth again, my old rig with ddr2 800mhz still cant manage to play it smoothly even with a GTX 560. I am using 4 stick of 1GB DDR2 800MHZ for a total of 4GB DDR2

Yes, I'm using 8 GB and it runs realy well. I have changed latency from 6-6-6-18 to 5-5-5-9, but try to reduce it anyway if it is stable. U have to use same settings for all modules. Also u can try to change positions of the modules.

for some reason my dota 2 fps went back to normal without changing anything, yeah maybe the last update fixed it

Updated BIOS and now I'm able to use default latency settings normally. So BIOS was the main issue here.
