What card is equivalent to the 940mx

I've looked around and couldn't find much of anything about the 940mx, besides the ddr3 version beating a gt 740. Note: I'm asking about the ddr5 version

It's like an Acer e15 I think. My friend just have me the specs: i5 6200u, 8gb ddr4 ram, 2gb ddr5 940mx, 256gb ssd.

Ok why would u want a GPU equivalent to "GT 940MX" ? That is very low-end

For Desktop, best bet is getting GTX 750 Ti or GTX 950
750 is good enough for 720/768p
950 is good enough for 1080p
If on a tight budget.

GT 720. I was going to say the 730 or 740 but those have about 4 times the memory bandwith than the 940MX because of the GDDR5 memory.

Really? From what I gathered because of the ddr5 (not ddr3) model the 940mx performed slightly better than the gt 740, but I'm only human.

Yea basically his LAPTOP is not for Games; period.
It's a media PC, nothing more.

AAA Games will not work on that low-spec.
They might install and run; but it'll be VERY low FPS no manner what u try.

Mobile is no where near Desktop
For example, GTX 970M is only on-par with maybe GTX 950/960 Desktop GPU; if even.

Yeah i know its pretty bad. He has a ps4 though, so he only plays older games and early access stuff like guns of icarus. He only bought the laptop because his parents didn't trust him with building a pc.

940gt would be around the intel hd and r7 240 range

instead of buying a hdd for the laptop, get a ssd

I just felt the need to say this, the Geforce 940mx is a great card for people who need a card in a laptop on a budget. (I'm only suggesting the superior GDDR5 version often found in Aspire E 17 models or perhaps other models). I Can run Overwatch Epic Graphics with every setting put to the absolute max on 900p 100% Res Scale 30 fps. You are able to hit 60 without any drops at any time during game play by turning down your resolution (Rarely this needs to be done) or turning down your graphics settings (this often needs to be done). I have a list of games here that are easily playable Very High Graphics or High Graphics here. (FPS is the absolute minimum you will see it go to). If there is no resolution statement assume 900p 100% Resolution Scale. The FPS is capped at 60 but can achieve higher, but is unnecessary. Anti Aliasing mode has also been disabled for every game but the ones that state they have it enabled.
T-AA is a type of anti aliasing that increases FPS in R6S by turning down quality.
MSAA is a very resource heavy anti aliasing that makes the game look amazing from 2X MSAA until 8X MSAA. FXAA is anti aliasing that increases quality in return of almost no performance decrease.

Warframe 1080p Maximum 42 FPS (Very Graphic Intensive moment) normally if V-Sync is off you won't see it go below 70 or 80 FPS, although I have it capped at 60.
PlanetSide 2 Maximum 30 FPS (Capped there but doesn't drop at all normally getting around 35 FPS)
CSGO 1080p Max (8x MSAA) 56 FPS (Normally 60 FPS)



This is without any Overclock at all, when you overclock you may see a slight Increase in performance but in games like CS:GO I did not. I believe the 4 FPS occasional drop found in de_nuke in CS:GO is caused by the processor though I am not certain. The laptop I have used to test these game is a Aspire E 17 (E5-774G-582T)

My Full Specs:
Geforce 940MX (GDDR5 Version) 2 GB VRAM
i5-7200U up to 3.1 Ghtz Dual Core 4 Threads (Quite slow but the graphics card makes up for it)
12 GB DDR4 Memory (Very Fast)
1000GB HDD (Quite slow on boot up but the actual FPS in games makes up for it.


If you have a similar model or the exact model you may not see the same FPS but you may see similar. AGAIN THIS IS THE GDRR5 Version of the Geforce 940MX. The 940M is likely to perform quite marginally worse and even the standard 940MX (DDR3) can perform up to 30% worse. That does not mean the 940m is bad I am just unsure of the actual FPS it would achieve but it would be quite worse. This PC costed me $800 CAD and would cost around (according to google currency converter) $637.12 USD. In the end great card and runs all games very well. Good for University or high school students who want to game.

The card is similar in performance to a GeForce GT 730.

Yes, you will be able to play games like Overwatch by turning down the resolution or capping the framerate with RTSS but you would easily hit 60FPS at 1920x1080 with a 1050.

Actually the 940mx is faster in performance than the GT 740 by a very slight amount and we're talking about the GDDR5 940mx which is even faster than that. While it is true the GTX 1050 provides about 250% more performance not everyone may be able to afford that and I was stating that if you need a budget card in a laptop I would recommend the 940mx because it provides 60 FPS performance by tweaking graphics settings, although the 1050 would be the way to go with a custom desktop yes.

Budget card in laptop = MX150 i.e GT 1030, or GTX 960M. Both are 40% faster than the GTX 940MX GDDR5 version.
