970 or 1070?
As of now the reveal of the 1070 has barely left a mark on the pricing of the 970. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti at the moment, and as you can tell, it is extremely outdated. I can't even run the latest triple A's anymore.

So, as the need for upgrading is high for me right now, I can't decide at all whether I should spend my money on a 1070 for around 380 euros or on a MSI 970 for 330. I don't have any idea if the 3,5 GB of VRAM is going to be a bottleneck in the future or not, in which case the 1070 has got me covered with a whopping 8 GB.

I've never covered a GPU release before, so I don't know how the prices are going to change, or when brands like MSI start producing their own variants.

I'm really thankful for just about any insight!

The 1070 is defiantely the better deal. Questio is where ur gonna find a 1070 for 380. It is the MSP but until now prizes i'm seeing for the 1080 are pretty outragous, at least in germany.

Getting a Gtx 980Ti is a much better deal. You get a lot more Cuda cores (2816) than the 1070 which only has 1920 Cuda cores, on the Gtx 980Ti you have a wider memory interface (384-bit) whereas the Gtx 1070 only has a 256-bit memory interface and the Gtx 980Ti has a faster memory bandwidth (336.5) whereas the Gtx 1070 only has 256. The only real down side to the Gtx 980Ti is it has less VRAM (6GB) and the Gtx 1070 has 8GB but that doesn't really matter.

I was converting from dollars to euros so it might be that. By the way. Does a motherboards PCI Express slot matter? Some cards like this 1070 uses PCI Express 3.0, but I don't know if that refers to another physical design, in which case I'd have to change out my motherboard :(

GTX 1070 matches the performance levels of a GTX 980 Ti. Most optimal for maxing out 1440p resolution or 1080p with high refresh rate. Later technology supported.

GTX 970 on the other hand is the rebuild of the GTX 780. Same performance level, but half the wattage for that performance. The GTX 780 is 3GB, in which the GTX 970 offers 4GB. It's a freebee 0.5GB and 0.5GB slower memory pool, at no extra cost (some people just complain about that 0.5 slower pool, however it's still a lot faster than system RAM and hard drive, also you can avoid it). Most optimal at 1080p resolution. Was the best performance to cost ratio graphics card of 2014.

There's however no comparison between the two cards. Get a GTX 970, 980 or 980 Ti second hand for dirt cheap if possible, else get the GTX 1070.

Both will use the PCI-e 3.0 (16x) slot of the motherboard. If you only have PCI-e 2.0, then it's backwards compatible, just avoid SLI (multiple cards) as it will bottleneck the bandwidth and not run at maximum performance levels.

'GTX 1070 matches the performance levels of a GTX 980 Ti' Sorry but your very wrong about that. The Gtx 980Ti kills the Gtx 1070 by miles.

The gtx 1070 is where to place your money right now until they show other models of it and if you are sticking with nvidia as it outshines even the titan x for a fraction of the price and it will only increase as updated drivers and games come out that will require new gen cards more.

I am not sure where you are looking but about every review out there shows the 1070 exceeding even the titan x and even more so then the normal 980 ti and again the 980 ti costs more then the 1070 unless you buy a used.

I have stated the facts in second post, you can't argue about the truth.

If you say so...

I've only seen stats and a few real-world FPS benchmarks.

GTX 1080 is approx 21% faster than the Titan X and 28% faster than the GTX 980 Ti. Able to perform 4K on a single card smoothly. It has GDDR5X memory (which is double the bandwidth of GDDR5).

Oh the other hand, GTX 1070 performs around the same as a GTX 980 Ti or slightly better. It still has GDDR5 memory?

This however depends on the resolution and quality settings you are gaming at. So just averaging over 15 game tests.

The Nvidia Pascal really excel more at VR content and higher resolutions. VR performance is pretty much tripled. So not saying GTX 980 Ti would be worth the upgrade to GTX 1080, as it's also a beast for 1440p, but depending what you want to use it for.

Where you get your information from?

Or you could go look at any actual reviews currently out there and see 1070 beats it hands down and it's only in the early states of being released so it will actually get better.

Unless you are too lazy to see you are wrong and here are some prime examples:

http://www.clubic.com/carte-graphique/carte-graphique-nvidia/article-807190-4-test-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070.html

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-8gb-pascal-performance,4585.html

So if you want a slower older gen card that costs more go with the geforce 980 ti or wait until the 1070 becomes available, other then the fe of course, and grab one.

'1070 beats it hands down' Apart from it doesn't, anyway I'm not wasting my time arguing about this so I'm off.

Stop comparing pure specs where there are a lot more to look at then what you talked about.

The new gen cards uses a different architecture and uses 16 nm over 980 ti's 28 nm as this gives the 16 nm last I checked around a 40% speed boost while drawing the same or less power.

I suggest you learn to do a bit of research next time before you spout incorrect information that you know nothing about as you have not shown any place that would agree with you about that.

Yeah, at first glace I can see how the specs look better on the GTX 980 Ti, compared to the GTX 1070 specs. However, you are missing the GPU architecture changes between Maxwell vs Pascal. ps: Pascal was developed from $7 billion and 2 years of research.

Double the transistors.

Nvidia confirmed that the GTX 1080 will push around 9 TFLOPS of (likely single-precision floating point) performance from a chip built around 7.2 billion transistors. By comparison the Titan X pushes around 7 TFLOPS from its 8 billion transistors. The GTX 1070 is said to push 6.5 TFLOPS. Hense it gets close to GTX 980 Ti performance.
