Why do the windows OS's suck so much?
XP-> Vista-> 7.

Only good windows OS's. And Vista was only good because you could use XP any time you needed.

Now they put out garbage OS after garbage OS. Like at least the older garbage was ♥♥♥♥ like 2000 which was alright. Or vista which was just okay. (but with access to launching everything in XP made it decent)

Why and how did microsoft go so wrong? When will windows release it's next ACTUAL os? I feel like i'm living in a feaver dream waiting for them to stop messing around.

like is it that hard to improve on the progress they've made with xp through 7 without making it a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥? Do they even remember what simplifcity of design is about? ♥♥♥♥ me i feel like if i get a new computer i'm going to have to destroy the O.S. like the virus it is.

Your thoughts?

Umm... what?

Windows 10 is the best OS they've released so far. Only conspiracy theorists hate Win 10 and mainly because of the so-called "spyware".

They only make incremental improvements, but when you have a monopoly you dont need to make a giant change.

Not just us mad conspiracy types. Ask any Sys admin (especially the ones who work in education as they tend to have large windows networks) and they will tell you exactly the same thing that it is:
Overly invasive whilst being more restrictive than any previous MS OS.

As for Linux, I am currently gaming on Linux exclusively, sure we might not get the latest and greatest crap offering from Activision, EA or ubisoft. With valves support though (+gog) we do have around 3000 games and counting on Linux.

Linux is a perfectly Viable alternative, outside of gaming. You just don't hear about it because it's free, ergo no one makes a profit from spending the time and money to promote it.
You don't hear about it because it sucks. And this is coming from someone who uses it every day.

Which Linux do you use?

See that's the other issue with linux. WIth so many varieties people have a hard time figuring out which distro is right for them.
I must say that I've had more success with Win XP than Win 7, Win 8.1, and Win 10 combined. I agree that Win 10 is coming together nicely, but only with the proper hardware. I had a PC with Win XP and it held up well for about 10 years and I only needed to refresh install it a couple of times. Win 7's problem is that it can break if the PC loses power during the process of installing updates. Now it tends to have issues with clean installs on a UEFI system because of all of those frickin' updates it has to install. Win 8.1 was a mess because of various issues and having to reinstall it several times. I had issues with BSODs on Win 10 because of bad drivers during installs. It took several months to find the proper hardware to get Win 10 to run stable. Older hardware just does not seem to work right; I had an older Intel SSD from 2012 which was prone to driver: power state failure crashes on Win 10 and after I installed the OS on a new Samsung SSD, I have not had any BSODs since. Additionally, you cannot mix GPUs of different architectures on Win 10. I tried pairing a GTX 970 with a GTX 660 for PhysX and the drivers for the GTX 660 kept being disabled.

Sure, Linux is still around and kicking 25 or so years since its release? And it sucks? Sorry troll if it sucked it wouldn't be around any more and something better would have taken its place. Computers don't last long if they aren't good, same goes with OS, hardware, software, etc. If it "sucks" it will drop off fast. Linux sure hasn't dropped off in its 25 years of use, in fact people consider it a major success even with it's weakness's.
I'm using Windows 8.1 and it'll get supported so that i feel good. I'm not going move anywhere to 10 or thing. There wasn't even 9! Duo 95/98 problems? That's bull crap. Jeez these guys at Microsoft are just weirdos.
Windows 8.1 for rest of my PC til it ded.

They suck because the average user is an idiot when it comes to com ports, irqs, boot sectors... Etc... So they have dumbed the OS down to try and fit every idiot.

I agree with what Start Running has said about Win10. I really don't like how it takes away so much control from the user. If I wanted that type of restriction, I would already own an Apple. I really don't like the fact that it gets rid of software you already have because Microsoft disapproves.

However, has anyone created a realistic alternative? What choice do you really have at this point?

Linux is a perfectly Viable alternative, outside of gaming. You just don't hear about it because it's free, ergo no one makes a profit from spending the time and money to promote it. Funning thing is. Valve and Steam have done a lot to boost Linux in the gaming sphere, and you can actually see it happening. Very few games actually straight up require DX 11 and above. Support it yes, but require it to function, hardly. Developers are gradually moving towards the open source alternatives, if only because it makes cross platform developement significantly easier and more cost effective.

That's basicallyone reason MS is so desperate to get W10 on so many PCs. From what I have heard, they're working out a deal wherein only apps sold through their appstore can make use of certain windows performance features, so basically you either sell through their appstore or your software potentially runs like ♥♥♥♥♥.

Of course for that to have any teeth, they need to rush the roll out.

I have heard a lot about linex, but have never used it. I really hope linex becomes more robust and is used more for gaming. We PC people need an alternative from Microsoft and Apple. I don't really like either of them.

The main thing that has kept linux out of Gaming is more or less the same thing that has kept the mac out. Developers over time became very dependent on DirectX which in fairness solved a major problem in game development at the time. Now with the Open source rivals of DirectX gaining more support even from the hardware manufacturers...it's now becoming more pragmatic for developers to develop with the open source like OGL, since it makes it easier to 'port the game to other systems like Mac and Linux.

I'v used ever Windows OS from 3.0 upwards..... 98Se, XP and 7 are the cream of the crop. As for why they suck now. Different corporate motivation. See Microsoft wants to keep selling you see between Xp and 10 Mcicrosoft had a different design philosophy. They wanted to make sure you bought a new OS everty 2-3 years because that helps keep their revenue stream up.

With W10 however they're basically trying to turn Windows into a freaking appstore and there by cut a slice of the software you buy through it. I honestly do not trust W10 and the increasingly shady lengths MS is employing to get you to upgrade for free is becoming out right worrying.

As in they are doing their best to remove your ability to say no to the upgrade.

Almost exactly my sentiments. Every day I get a wee bit closer to dumping it entirely and going w/a Linux distro. I dual-booted XP and Ubuntu for several years and was quite happy with that. Very soon I think I'm going to reach the point that I'm done with Windows entirely. Good riddance.

Elite dangerous is the only reason there is a windows partition on my computer. Even then I have only booted windows 3 times in six weeks.

Been having fun with borderlands 2, bioshock and tomb raider, as I kind of didn't get the chance to play them first time around.
Also it looks like wayland and vulkan are both coming along nicely so it won't be too long before we see games actually performing as good as/if not better on Linux than on Windows.
I've only played 2 games in the last 3 or 4 months, and perhaps half a dozen in the last 2 years. I'm clearly not in the main demographic for Steam any longer, and of the games I do play only one is limited to Windows, currently. I don't really care. I've got a million ways to entertain myself that have nothing to do with computers, so losing out on a few games by switching to Linux isn't going to bother me in the slightest.

My only real issue at this point is that some of the other software I use has no Linux version, and I'm loathe to try to emulate because of the nature of the software and the other issues that would arise which I just don't feel like trying to deal with.

One other issue holding me back, though, is that my video card, an R9 390, isn't currently performing so well on Linux from what I've read recently. I'm keeping an eye on it, though, and hoping that AMD's upcoming driver changes are going to help the situation.

I really miss my old barebones XP install.
It was a gaming beast with an E8400 and 9800GTX+

I think windows OS have steered more towards touch/mobile computing and I do regret upgrading from win7
For people that use the app store on a desktop / laptop you are doing it wrong as they are for mobile devices. ;)

Step 1. Use classic shell to get windows looking just like xp / win 7 as you probably did if you used win 8 also.

Step 2. Disable the data mining crap win 10 uses in about 5 minutes unlike you can with mobile devices or chrome.

Step 3. Enjoy a os that's faster then win 7 or 8.
