AMD vs NVIDIA ((Closed))
I know, I know; it's the age old question of PC gamers: "Should I get an AMD GPU or a NVIDIA GPU?! How will I ever decide?!" And to be frank, it's probably been asked countless times here on Steam and on other computer forums across the internet. Honestly, though, I want to know from my fellow Steam users, based on the CPU that I just purchased (love the CPU and am not going to get a different one).

So far, I have my case, motherboard, and CPU for the very first rig that I'm building. Again, I know; I've been a laptop gamer for years because consoles were so much easier... you just buy it, stick in the disk, and start playing. I have always been a PC gamer deep down, though, and got my start via a Compaq desktop about 15 years ago with DOS still installed on it... so I've always been behind the times.

The CPU I purchased was the AMD FX-8350. Please, hold off on the boo'ing, okay? Thanks. Now, where I'm torn is that I've always used AMD products. Every single laptop and desktop that I have ever owned has been AMD, so it's more than I'm used to them than I am Intel. And yes, I know that Intel is vastly superior, but what can I say? Old habits die hard.

As far as the GPU goes, I've had my eye on the Gigabyte R9 280X 3GB OC card. The longer I hold off on buying it, the more I wonder if I should lower my expectations and go for the newly announced R9 285 (run in Crossfire).... or.... if I should abandon ship as far as the GPU goes and swim over to NVIDIA and possibly get something along the lines of the GTX 770.

So, here's my question....
Radeon R9 280X
Radeon R9 285 x2
GTX 770 (or similar)

Keep in mind, though, that I'm not getting a different CPU... not even the FX-9590 (as much as I would love one, I am trying to stay in a budget).

Get whatever you want. You're asking if you should buy a Toyota or a Honda.

Get R9 290. Cheaper then two R9 285 and lot more stable then Crossfire. Performance is quite nice too.

Well, I'm asking because I - quite honestly - don't know. What I'm building will be a nearly dedicated gaming rig, and I've never built one.

I mean... is Shadowplay worth getting NVIDIA for? Is Mantle going to end up just being a Battlefield thing?

Also, I drive a Mazda, so Toyota VS Honda doesn't really apply. Haha.

Unfortunately, the 290 (only one I can find is the 4GB) is out of my price range. About $300-350 is my ceiling for a GPU.

And btw R9 285 is not actually better card then R9 280X, performance is actually less.

It's also cheaper than the 280X, which is why I was thinking of getting two and putting them in Crossfire.

Here you go, R9 290 for $350, ofcourse when you dont live in US then you are pretty much screwed in that regard:

Both brands play games. But if you like what they have to offer, go for it. AMD has mantle and freesync coming down the line. NVidia has the geforce experience with shadowplay which I like a lot. AMD uses more power, but NVidia is more expensive. Decide on the little factors.

I know all about the technical differences and all of that jazz. What I don't know about is the actual user experience. And while I have always had AMD products, they've mostly been APU's with integrated GPU's; right now I'm using the A10-4600M with integrated Radeon HD 7660G; I've never once had an actual GPU seperated from the CPU... so I know very little about how the experience actually is, for either.

i prefer nvidia because of 1,5x and 4k downsampling but for 300-350 bucks you ll get more power @ amd/ati

You're building a gaming machine. All that matters is if they can play games or not. Both brands do that.

Are you deciding on how much they cost?
Go AMD.
Do you wanna record your games?
Get NVidia with their ShadowPlay and Geforce Experience.
Are you going to play at 4K resolution?
Get AMD.
Does energy efficiency matter?
Get NVidia.
Do you just wanna get something that looks cool?
Then get either of them.

I've owned both. Right now I have an NVidia 770 reference design. I like their power efficiency, I like the stock cooler design, I use ShadowPlay a lot, I like GeForce Experience, and I'll get G-Sync when it becomes more common.

Get R9 280X for $220~ on this sale
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/club-3d-video-card-cgaxr928x7

OR

get a single R9 290 starting at around $350~

From what I saw of the R9 285 on wikipedia it actually looks more like a R9 275 (between 270X and 280) or at least no better than a overclocked R9 280 (non-X) which means it will *probably* cost more than it's worth. The only really positive thing I currently have to say about it is that it's power efficiency is better than the other cards and sits between the R9 270X and R9 280.

So ya anyways I'd stick with the R9 280X or get a R9 290 if you are willing to spend more.

On the Nvidia side you could get a GTX 760 for slightly less than the $220 R9 280X. If you are into lower-power (watts I mean) cards the GTX 760 is only 170 watts TDP and a fair bit shorter than some of the larger R9 280X or R9 290 cards.

If you are looking at spending more than the $220 you could get a R9 280X for you should maybe be thinking:
"R9 290 or 2*GTX 760 in SLI?"
1 R9 290 will cost $350-$450+
2 GTX 760 will cost 2 times $200+ = $400+

Also fair to mention:
GTX 770 @ $280 and up, not attractive for crossfire but still a card to notice

Personally I'd go for a single R9 290.

Also personally I'd say a single R9 280X is currently better value at $220~ but that deal only lasts till the 27th so hurry up and choose.

For higher NVidia cards meanwhile I feel like their prices increase too much relative to performance. The GTX 760 or maybe GTX 770 is their sweet-spot for gaming with the GTX 750 ti not being powerful enough (but the awesome for a low power office machine at for example a architecture firm that needs to 3D model buildings sometimes) and the GTX 780 and up costing too much.

To be honest, I'm not quite sure what I want, either. To know, that is. That's why I'm here asking about them.

I guess, if I had to narrow it down, I'd like to know which would work with my CPU better on the games listed and which will likely last longer (280X vs 770).

Your CPU is fine. You're making a bigger deal out of this than it needs to be. Both those cars are equally strong. They both have similar features.
