Dell XPS 8700 Ram Upgrade,Help!
Hey all

I have a Dell XPS 8700

Specs:

OS Windows 7 64bit

HHD Seagate Berricuda 1tb 7200RPM

SSD Crucial M500 120gb

GPU Evga GTX 760 SC

CPU Intel Core i7 4770 @ 3.9 ghz

PSU Corsair GS800

I currently have 8 gigs of ram i want to upgrade to 16 but my question is" What frequency ram can my pc handle normal speed is 1600mhz i want to go to 1800mhz can my pc do that?

Ram i'm looking at now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233539&cm_re=Corsair_vengeance_pro_16_gb-_-20-233-539-_-Product

Ram i currently have: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/xps-8700/CT4403517 eccept mine is 8 gbs not 16

Any logical help would be epreciated.

I know my pc could run 1800mhz but could it run it at 1800mhz or would it default to 1600?

The difference between 1600 and 1800 is so great you wont even notice and i doubt the machine will either.

use cpuz to see the specs on your current ram
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
cpuz -> spd tab
select each dimm to see its size/speed/timings/voltage

if your board has 4dimm slots it can take 4 dimms (as long as the first 2 were running under 1.55v)
if they were over 1.55v it may have cooked the imc on the cpu and it wont be able to run 3-4 dimms

if you want to buy a similar 2x4g kit, you can
same or greater speed
same or lower rimings
save or lower volrage
and run them at the orig ram speeds

Yes but when i go into the Bios it says "Ram Speed 1600mhz"
and you can't change that, now the cpu can't read the ram speed so in my estimation if i buy expensive ram then it won't use the extra speed which means i wasted my $ any idea's ?

the cpu can run much faster than its spec

intel says 4770k uses 1333/1600 ram
http://ark.intel.com/products/75123/Intel-Core-i7-4770K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz
but it can easily run over 3200 ram kits

but all kits need to have similar spd or xmp profiles to work together

Yes but it's not all about what the CPU can do it's what the "middle man" can handle...

most boards allow for ram speeds over the cpu spec
else it wont hurt running it at 1600, other than the price

yeah...

it''s alittle to big and red lol

1600 cl10 isnt much faster than 1333 cl9
go for cl9 ro lower

speed / cl = value higher = better
1866 cl9 = 207
1600 cl8 = 200
1333 cl7 = 190
1600 cl9 = 177
1333 cl8 = 166
1600 cl10 = 160
1333 cl9 = 148 (generic ram)
