G-sync Vs 4K monitor
Good morning!

I need some assistance from someone who is far more tech savvy than myself. I'm looking at purchasing a new rig from either Falcon Northwest or Digital Storm, and I see that these vendors have a limited time offer that includes an ASUS 28 in. 4k monitor (PB287Q) with the purchase of any TITAN Z system. The only cause for concern I have is that they seem to really tout the G-Sync feature on these video cards, and suggest purchasing a monitor that takes advantage of G-Sync. Unfortunately the PB287Q does not.

The issue is that I don't see any 4k monitor that takes advantage of g-sync. So in your opinion, would it be more intelligent to wait on a better promotion, perhaps one that takes money off the actual system itself, and purchase a g-sync monitor at a later date? Or go with the 4k monitor without g-sync offered as a promotion?

I suppose I could purchase another monitor at a later date, and use the free 4k monitor for the time being. But my current rig certainly couldn't handle a 4k montior, and I'm not sure how well a dual monitor 4k system would work, even with a TITAN Z?

Thanks in advance for your help, I greatly appreciate it!

For gaming, you might as well hold off on a 4K monitor for at least a few more years. Go for a 1440p monitor right now, 4K is currently too taxing with gaming, even with high-end cards.
Keep your fingers off the Titan Z. That's 3000$ for the performance of two 500-700$ GPUs.

Certainly not worth it.

You'd be better off getting a system with 2x 780Ti/290X or a 295X2 and then you'd be left with 1500-2000$ that would've otherwise unnecessarily gone into the Titan Z. And with those 1500-2000$, you can get yourself whatever monitor you want and then STILL be left with money.

And no, not even those would be enough for 4K gaming in modern/demanding titles. I've seen several game benchmarks where dual/triple SLI/CFX systems couldn't reach 60fps at 4K.

Wow thanks a lot for all of your input and suggestions! I think I'm going to do as you suggest and keep my fingers off of the Titan Z and stay away from 4k gaming for the time being. I'll probably look into that monitor you suggested Rumpel. I was thinking it would be really awesome to run Bioshock Infinite and see that game in all of it's 4k glory, but if it's going to be a laggy mess, it's certainly not worth it.

After reading your comments, I had a chance to take a look at GPU boss and other benchmark websites and everywhere I look with the exception of GPU boss, favors AMD. Gamers seemed to be outraged over the fact that GPU boss scored higher benchmarks for a single card 780Ti over the 295X2, every other benchmark seems to support that inaccuracy by favoring the 295X2. So even though I've always been an Nvidia guy, it would seem AMD is the way to go right now.

I couldn't find anything on a brief search, but are any of you aware of a better card just around the corner from each respective manufacturer? I know it's inevitable that I'll buy a card or two, and something new comes along and I've got old technology. I know DX12 is not far around the corner, and Nvidia has just started rolling out intro cards with the new Maxwell architecture. I just don't want to buy a card today, and have some revolutionary or superior product come out tomorrow!

So long story short, I guess now the question is do I invest in one of these other cards that's much better and cheaper than the Titan Z? Or hold off for something better/revolutionary that's right around the corner? Thanks again for all of your help, certainly saved me from an ill advised Titan Z purchase! :)

The problem with 4K gaming right now isn't with the hardware of gaming PC's but with the software. The way games are currently designed theyt make it very taxing to render 4K resolutions. Wait for the software to catch up with the hardware on this one. :summerskull:

With the new architecture that is going to be coming to nvidia's 8xx series cards I would personally try to hold off at least until this holiday season to see what's coming. Personally, I have been itching to build another rig for quite a while but I am waiting to sell mine until right before these GPU's are announced.

Thanks for the response, yeah I'm kind of in the same boat in terms of itching to get another rig. I'm rocking a GTX 590 and paid some serious coin for this card back in the day, and it's really served me well over the years. But it's started to struggle on some of the higher end games and I can no longer game on highest settings anymore.

It's funny you mention the Nvidia 8xx cards, I was just reading all the rumors regarding the specs and release date on these cards right as I noticed your post. As much as it pains me to admit, I think your right, with the new architecture for Nvidia and dx12 coming out soon, the wise thing would be to be patient, it seems like the industry as a whole is making some significant changes, even AMD seems to have some great ideas in the cooker, and the mantle technology sounds promising, I'll be interested to see if it catches on with developers.

I'll try to limp this rig to the 2015 finish line, with the goal of having a new rig in time for Tom Clancy's The Division. Thanks again for the sound advice, I really appreciate it. I've actually learned a lot speaking with you guys and researching some of your suggestions. Thanks again!

I know, I can barely wait for all of this new hardware! It's stupid actually because there is no reason why I need to build something different (current rig here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wd9XVn) but with a couple of new cases that have come out and the new cards coming I really want to build a smaller single card solution. I was never really one of those guys that chases all the newest stuff all of the time but the Maxwell architecture is supposed to be pretty amazing. Not to mention that I'll probaby throw an Intel chip in this next one and the z97 mobos are so awesome.
