A standard 1080p monitor is ~150$, which leaves 350$ for the PC. That won't get you good gaming performance though. 500$ for the PC alone might get you a halfway decent rig to start off with, but that's about it.

That was exactly what crossed my mind.

$500 just doesn't seem enough if you are looking to buy both a brand-new monitor and a decent computer.

Not too shabby for 500$, but you see the issue. It's not really a good gaming PC. 4GB RAM is on the low side, the CPU is a dual core, the case is kinda meh, and the monitor is somewhat small.

But for 500$, you gotta cut back somewhere.

Not bad for the price though, can always unpgrade ram and 21.5 is actually perfect in my opinion anyway.

Here is the best I can recommend anywhere near your price range:
Tower includes Windows 8.1 64bit and 1920*1080 Monitor.

Base Total: $602.69
Promo Discounts: -$6.00
Combo Discounts: -$27.00
Mail-in Rebates: -$45.00
Shipping: $1.99
Total: $526.68

It's a good basic PC. It's not a real good gaming PC though BUT it has the potential to be if you can later add in a R9 270 GPU or bettter dedicated graphics card. Then it will be around and about as powerful as one of the current gaming consoles. R9 270X GPU's start at about $165 last I saw and R9 270's are like $20~ cheaper.
