Old games on new graphic Cards
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I would be greatful for some advice. I am putting together a PC on PC Spcecialist and cannot decide which graphics card to get. The PC won't be used for new games, just mostly older games. I am attracted to the GTX 1060 but am worried that some older games won't be compatible with this very new Model. I'm thinking of maybe getting a 750 ti as that may be more compatible with older games. Am I worrying needlessly? Would older games work perfectly on the newer GTX 1060? Hope someone can adise me on this. Thanks!

The video card won't be a problem, but an overall newer system can have problems with old games. You can look for guides here on Steam or elsewhere to get games with compatibility issues working.

Yeah, mainly due to the operating system though, as said below.

Older games will be compatible with literally any newer hardware. This is why drivers exist, so that software developers do not need to develop for specific hardware themselves.

The only incompatibilities that can really arrive are from newer versions of operating systems, but most older games will be fine.

It can come down more to OS & Drivers really.
But how old are the games you speak of?

Picking such a GPU won't really matter. I mean why would you be putting together a brand new build for a bunch of old games?

The reason I'm putting together a new systen is because the old one died a few months ago and id rather have a card that will last me a longer than the older 750ti. I will mostly be playing older RPG's such as the Final Fantasy series, Pillars of Eternity etc

What will be operating system be? The GTX 1060 6GB will last a long while, especially considering the games you'll be playing.

I use GeForce GT 740 and it is in a good standing with older / very old games.

GTX 10 series may act bad and may derail the game.

Yes thats what I'm worried about, If I got that shiny new 1060 and couldnt play Final Fantasy IX id be gutted.

It depends on the OS, supported drives it need to work.

GPU - Make sure to have up to date drivers, and get Nvidia Physx as well.
Motherboard - Make sure it's Bios is up to date.

Some really old games use older things, like OpenAL, or etc...

Most of the old games aren't compatible with Windows 10 or even Windows 7 sadly :/ what you could do is install Windows XP which will almost certanly run every old game you plan to install but the problems are that Windows XP only supports 4 GB of RAM, is hard to find drivers for and isn't supported by Microsoft at all.

It would be better to just emulate windows xp or if you're a purist try to find a windows xp system on Ebay or Craigslist

But because the OP has windows 10 a gpu upgrade shouldn't break older games

The latest GPUs can run older games just fine.

Just yesterday I played Phantasmagoria and The 11th Hour on my 1080.

I've yet to run into a game that doesn't work on Windows 10 with newer hardware. Some games need to run in compatibility mode and a few tweaks here and there... But that's really because of the OS.

Actually, if you have windows 7 professional or ultimate with latest update, you can run games that use XP without a problem, just use the compatibility mode. For Windows 10, you can just emulate OS very easily, also fun fact, all Dos games on Steam has a emulator with them already, Dos-box.

The games I want to play are on Steam and I have already played a few on my old system on Windows 7 without a problem but that had an old ATI Radeon 4850 GPU. I'm not worried about the OS just comptibility with newer cards. Is there a site that lists the cards that games are compatible with? For example the recommended system requirement for Final Fantasy 9 is GTS8600 but doesnt tell me if a later card is fully comapible.

Doesn't matter with GPU, the only main roll when comes to comptibility is meeting or having better hardware for system requirements, as well having the OS that it can support on.
