SOLVED - Download speed is 5 megabytes, steam uses only 1MB max

So I have apparently had paid for a download speed of 5MB down for the last 5-6 years but only have had a 1MB down and 0.9MB up speeds. But ever since I got a new router, my internet connection has been buffed 5 times the speed of the last. I'm thinking about making a huge complaint to my ISP for stealing my money for nothing the last half of a decade.

But anyways, since my internet speed has been buffed, Steam still uses only 1MB of my download speed that it has always done. How do I make it use more?

Edit: Okay well I restarted my download and the download speed just jumped sky-high.

But I'm still kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off that I've been ripped off the past few years for nothing. I could almost sue the ISP provider but don't have the money for a lawyer and all that stuff.

If your ISP is 5 Megabits/ps download; then your download speed is 1/8 of that speed in MegaBytes

8 Bit = 1 Byte
ISP generally tell the internet speed in Bit. Downloadspeed is shown in Steam in Byte.

So, if you have 5Megabit, then you should have a downloadspeed of about 640Kilobyte per second.

What does it say when you test your internet connection on http://www.speedtest.net ?

No I had before a speed of 1.2 Megabytes down and I think it was 900 kilobits up before.

Now I have a 45-50 Megabit speed down which is roughly about 5 Megabytes and 8 Megabits up which is yes, 1 Megabyte.

isp speeds are rated in megabits not megabytes
when data is transfered its about 10 Mbit per 1 MByte

if your isp plan is 5Mb, thats about .5MB

if you can download steam games at around 1MB/s thats good for a 5Mb plan

No, like I said, I now have a 45 megabit down speed compared to what I had before which was I think 8 megabits down.

Anyways, my Steam download speeds are now 5 megabytes after I just restarted the download I was doing.

compare your isp with speedtest.net

im on a 15Mb/s pkg and can get 30-40Mb/s

steam downlod speeds are not a good speed gage
it can max the isp but often is limited by hdd and other factors

Yeah that's where I got my result which was 45 Megabits down.

Weird, now it is 28 megabits down.

Okay now Speedtest says that I have a ping of 16 ms, down speed is 28.97Mb/s and up is 9.79Mb/s

Earlier today, the results were:

15 ms, 46.56Mb/s down and 9.74 Mb/s up.

Before I got the new router, my results were these:

12.41 Mb/s down, 0.88 Mb/s up and 14 ms

I'm fairly certain I have had always a router as multiple devices have been able to connect to it, but not sure 100% :D

He means better/new Modems & Routers can yeild better overall performance.
As most outdated ones can't handle 50mbps +

So your ISP plan is 50mbps then? So an actual download speed of approx 5-6MB would be what to expect; at max download speed.
