You can use gsync and vsync at the same time.
There was a previous driver that forced vsync on with gsync. Maybe you updated your driver and noticed that it was resolved?
Whatever the case may be, if you want frames limited to 144, simply enable vsync or use a frame limiter.
I play csgo on a pg279q with gsync enabled and have no issues whatsoever.
Gsync synchronizes the refresh rate of the monitor with the frame rate. This is not the same as limiting your maximum frame rate.
If frames go over your max refresh rate, in your case 144hz, then the screen will just stay at 144hz and the frame rate will still go higher.
As I said before, if you want to limit the maximum frame rate, you need to enable vsync or use a frame limiter.

@Bill well if you say so...
That's not what she said, she said "because you cant see more then 144fps on a 144Hz" which is completely true..... Talking about stupid replies ^^^^
At 144htz Vsync input lag will be about 10ms or lower, less than most moniors response time
