if its a jst style connector, use a small screwdriver to seperate them

pulling can pull the pins from the header
I cant tell if its just got a clip that i cant see
i want to safely remove it without damage so i can reinstall at some point

Instead of trying to pry the fan-wiring side connector alone, try use a small/thin screw-driver and get under the keyed-cap connection; and lift it straight up... so as not to bend the pins, or break of of the connectors.
