It's not just GPU, it's everything.
LMAO, the small that things that will cost you $2500 to $3000 for the powerhouse gaming PC you are talking about. Ah heck, why not?
I for one will probably be building a new PC in 2023, but I want to wait till the 14th Gen Meteor Lake comes out. Raptor Lake and Zen 4 will provide some modest gains, but from what I am reading, the real performance gains in the CPU space will come when the Meteor is dropped. Anxious to see how AMD will counter at that time.
Those are the CPUs that you will want to pair your powerhouse 40 series or 7000 series GPUs with.
New pricing is still a bit high considering the age of the cards now, but its much much better.
That is hilarious! I sold my 1070s for $200 each back in 2019. LMAO!
Yeah, They were awesome cards, I had the gigabyte ones and had to replace the fans on both the cards at some point, and once SLI started to fall off, I wanted something better. Sold them and got me a 5700xt which was a decent upgrade for them games that didn't use SLI like Forza or COD.
I actually had two Asus ROG Strix 1070s in SLi. But I got divorced in 2019 and at the end of the year sold one of my 1070s because I needed some money. I sold the other one in the spring of 2020, but my friend ended up giving me an EVGA 1070 TI SC, so it worked out.
I really liked my 1070 SLi setup. I could get most games to work well with SLi. And those that really took advantage of it, like full GPU usage on each card, the performance was amazing. But even games that didn't support SLi, I could use Nvidia Profile Inspector and get them to work, sort of...lol.
But there is really no point to having an SLi setup in 2022. I ended up building a whole new PC last year with a 3070 TI. Letting my Dad use my 1070 Ti PC. Next year I might just build a whole new PC again around a 40 series or 7000 series GPU. Last July I really wanted a 3080 but at the time I could only get a 3070 Ti at MSRP. The way prices are dropping now, I almost feel like I should have waited. But if I was building a PC now, I wouldn't want to buy a high end card at MSRP. It will just be replaced and trumped by the end of the year anyway. Making you regret your purchase.
Although, if I can get a used 3080 Ti or 3090 for real cheap on ebay in the next couple months, I might just pull the trigger. But it would have to be real cheap.
Yeah I think October/November will be D-Day, GPU- and CPU-wise. Ive got rid of my AM4 compatible stuff already and Im going full Intel/Nvidia this time, the exact opposite of my last build.
Still rocking the 6900XTXH though. I would have never expected team red to beat the flagship of team green on this generation and thats why I believe, that the 4090TI will be pushed to the limits factory wise, to restore the honor. ^^
13900K in October, 4090 in November and TW3 Remastered in December.
Dont tell me life isnt good, Zeek. ^^
I know what you are saying. I really want a 40 series, or perhaps even a 7000 series, GPU. I have never really had an AMD, or ATI, GPU in my PC before. But I am always open to it. I have always been with Team Green. I feel Nvidia has always had the advantage when it comes to feature set and drivers, not to mention the ray tracing advantage. I felt this generation was no different. AMD might have had a slight advantage in the pure rasturization department, but better ray tracing performance and DLSS was what did it for me last year. Ray tracing not so much but I was really gung ho on DLSS and up-scaling tech. I still am. But this year I find it doesn't matter if it is DLSS or FSR. Though, I still think DLSS is better.
As for the next gen, I am not going to buy a GPU until probably 2023. And I will want to build a new rig around it. New CPU and PSU. Going to get a PCI-e 5.0 capable +1000w PSU. Only thing is, is that I don't really want to upgrade CPU with a Raptor Lake, or even Zen 4. I want to wait till Meteor Lake is out. From what I am hearing, that is where the real performance gains will be in the CPU space.
FSR2.0 made some huge progress but the support will never be as far advanced as for DLSS2.0. I cant see how AMD will catch up with past games since theyre already busy as hell with implementing FSR2.0 into new games.
Nvidia users can now use both technologies which is a huge benefit.
And dont let me start with the drivers. You know, we AMD users tend to hide our fear of drivers cause we take no sh*t from nobody, but the first 6-8 months after each release are horrifying and it makes you to curse AMD every single time.
But then they come up with something like SAM and they get their sh*t together and everythings fine again. Its some kind of a love-hate relationship but the raw power of the XTXH chip was worth it this time.
Sure, youve to forget about Ray-Tracing, even on a XTXH-chip, but I made my peace with it.
I dont need it (see, the AMD user in me is still fighting ^^). Ive seen RT content on a 3090TI and Im not really impressed.
It looks astonishing if it was implemented correctly into the game engine but as far as I can tell, you can count those game on one hand.
edit:
Cyberpunk and WD Legion being two of those games, where I would call the difference between RT on/off pretty significant. But only at ingame night-time.
edit II : And lets not forget how fun it is to overclock Zen2/3 CPUs. PBO and CurveOptimizer as well as RAM OC which was more important than ever before. It took me months to get those Flare X modules up to 4200Mhz but it was worth every single second.
When ray tracing is implemented correctly, it is pretty amazing IMO. I mean, the games that I have that do implement it, I do turn it on. And it does look impressive. But some games it is very subtle, while other games it is more pronounced. Honestly, out of all the games I have, I can't even think of one where I feel I "need" to have it, and where it looks so much better and changes the experience with it on. I guess Guardians of the Galaxy looks good with it, lol.
But in all actuality, I think the game that has implemented it the best is QuaKe II RTX. Sure, it is an old game, but the whole game is rendered using RTX, and it really amazing what they have done. I only have the demo, and it is demanding, even for an ancient game, but I think this shows what the future can bring with ray tracing. Once GPUs can handle the tech easily, and entire game engines begin being rendered with ray tracing, it will be a game changer. Right now it is more a novelty. I glimpse of the what the future holds. A tease if you will. But I do think it looks beautiful when done correctly.
Yeah for the most part SLI I could get it to work with Nvidia Inspector, but I was really into Forza and you just can not get SLI to work in that game and a single 1070s did alright for the most part, but at 2560x1440 I wanted to get as close to 165fps as I could to match my monitor refresh rate. Sold the 1070s to get the extra boost in FPS.
I had a Threadripper machine I bought off a good friend of mine for cheap, was a 1950x and I moved my 5700xt to it and my storage and sold my i7 rig to my brother.
My sister moved with us with her 3 kids, she was leaving her abusive druggy husband in Arizona so, of course I let her move in, we my Grandmother, my handicapped Aunt and my grandfather who had brain damage from strokes, I rented an apartment and figuring my sister would help around the house and it was 60 min away. She planned a get away with that guy, he drove from Arizona to Ohio to pick her up, whatever.
I decided to move back into my grandparents to continue to help around the house and bills, but I figured I'd pack my truck with some of my stuff, go to work and drive to my grandparents, Work was around 25 min from my grandparents.
While I was at work, someone broke into my truck, broke my side window and unlocked the door and took my Threadripper machine, my Asus 165hz monitor, my keyboard and my Peddles, left the steering wheel. I had cloths and coats and stuff on top of everything so idk how they knew.
I drive a 92 Silverado, so its not like it has a car alarm and its honestly quite easy to break the side windows with a screw driver by prying it, Police took a report and looked at camera's but ya know how that usually turns out. Cost me $300 to fix the cab where the prayed and replace the window.
I lost a Threadripper 1950x, 64GB of ram, 3x 1TB m.2 SSD's, the 5700x, the Asus Zenith extreme x399.
Took me a little while to get this system where its at now and a whopping $1300 for a the 6800xt lol. My ass still kinda hurts after that one.
Ouch, that is quite some bad luck. ♥♥♥♥♥♥, I'm sorry to here all that. Honestly, I think I would have been bummed about losing the PC the most. You can't really control what your loved ones will do or which path they take. Sometimes you have to let them make their own choices. But losing that rig, and paying 1300 for a 6800XT, ouch!!
Actually I almost payed over $1000 for my 3070 Ti a year ago. I was looking every where and waiting patiently for a GPU last year. I really wanted a 3080 but couldn't get one for the life of me. I kept joining the Newegg shuffle, and finally won one day, but it was for a Gigabyte 3070 Ti, part of a bundle for a motherboard and PSU I believe. It would of cost me around $1300. But I passed.
Then I finally almost broke down and paid that much for a scalped 3070 Ti on Amazon. But I didn't and at the end of July ANTonline had a bundle for sale for an EVGA 3070 Ti, an EVGA SuperNova 750 GT PSU, an EVGA mechanical keyboard, and EVGA gaming mouse, with Days Gone, so I pulled the trigger. In all I paid about MSRP for everything. So, a little over $800 for the 3070 Ti. Still expensive, but MSRP(at the time), and definitely not over $1000.
I built a new PC though, and ended using everything. Used the PSU in it, the 3070 Ti, and using the keyboard and mouse. I just haven't played Days Gone much. But maybe I will get to it someday, lol.
I was using my dual Xeon E5-2470 server and a GTX 780ti to game on for the time being, I had to rig up 2 PSU's keep it powered on when gaming lol, Both were 500 watt seasonic units until I was able to justify spending on new parts, the only things I got used was the x570 board and a EVGA 600watt PSU which I traded my Traxxas Maxx RC truck for, I don't use the PSU anymore, but it did get me up and running.
It was the Xeons on my old Phenom II x6 1100t Idk why I kept. lol
You can already snag a brand new 3080 Ti for around 899 or so; what more do people want or expect? 3060 is below $400
Well, if people don't mind a used GPU, you can get a 3080 Ti, or something in that range, for even lower. And I have a feeling that in the next month or so there will be an in flux of used GPUs from China that you will probably be able to snag for even cheaper.
Apparently, we haven't seen the true in flux of those used GPUs in the West yet. I know there is a stigma about GPUs that were used for mining, but a lot of people buy them and use them, and a lot are still in great condition, and perform just like new.
I know I am thinking of maybe snagging a 3080 Ti, 3090, maybe even a 6900XT, if I can get one super cheap. Like I mean super cheap. I really don't see the point of spending $900 or more on a GPU right now considering that the next gen is right around the corner and they will blow this gen out of the water. But if you can snag a current high end GPU for ultra cheap, why not?
