omg... just when things/everyone couldn't get more confused, banks are thrown in the mix!

I think this is the cue to hit "unsubscribe"!

this explains rank for you
That video is covering density, not rank.

Both of the samples of memory they compare is single rank (one is 1Rx8 and the other is 1Rx16, whereas dual rank will be labeled as 2Rx8 or 2Rx16).

That's the video! Good find. The density video is also good. I think I remember it including a brief explanation of banks within ranks.

Yes, that's a proper video for what OP was asking about ranks.

How can you tell the number of ranks on a crucial laptop stick?

If its installed your best bet is to run CPU-Z, switch to the SPD tab, select your module and it will tell under Ranks.

Learning these two features of your computer will assist in growth. Relying....on others can some times "best left unsaid". Thank you for this opportunity.
Quit spamming nonsense, yeesh.

Has nothing to do with dual rank or single rank for all your posts.

Everyone knows windows is trash but this is why everyone hates linux. Get a grip, man.

Linux
"sudo dmidecode --type 17"
Should provide RANK which is a way shows superiority in OS. Would be prudent to possible have a dual boot system for this case.

MAC OS
Unknown
Example: SPMemoryDataType possible terminal command with grep down to see what your looking for.

You might want to be them yet they might not want you to be them. APPs and HACKs advertised in HARDWARE & OPERATING SYSTEM should probably be reprimanded for spamming themselves to be downloaded and installed, tend to agree.
CPU-Z is not a hack. Neither is HwInfo, or other helpful tools to find out information, knowledge and help sort issues you may be having.

You on the either hand, are still spamming useless information. It's like you went to google, since couldn't understand how Dual Rank worked, and ran into commands someone posted.

As the video posted by someone else in this thread.

It explains it all.

Edit:

And if you want to make RAM even more confusing, there's also Bank Groups on each memory module as well. x4, x8, x16.

So, you need to know about Speed, e.i. 1800Mhz x2 for 3600Mhz during Dual Data Rate Mode. The Ranks, Single, Dual, Quad(rare in most home PC's) And also Bank Groups!

One addition I'll make is that most software I've used (CPU-Z and Thaiphoon Burner for example) tend to show rank information per DIMM/channel rather than the wider system configuration. Now, that namely only matters if one is using a number of modules above the amount of channels the CPU can handle (or if one is purposely sticking modules in the same channel before populating each channel at least once).

Namely, quad rank will typically only be seen on a consumer desktop if using four modules, where each module is dual rank. That's what I use and rank always shows as "dual" in such software. So there is an argument to be made to learning about it rather than relying on it a software field reading, but the notion that applications are "hacks" isn't one I agree with (plus looking up the part number will do the same thing and return the rank per module, not necessarily the rank of the system).

Also, probably more odd, but you CAN have tri-rank. That would involve using some RAM that is dual rank and some that is single rank in the same channel. And octo rank and such exists, but mostly in servers (I wonder, can HEDTs do this too, given they often have six to eight DIMM slots?).

Edit: To answer my own last question, probably not. I just realized HEDT is also often quad channel so even with eight DIMM slots, you'd still be limited to quad rank at most.

How to read into a device indefinitely. The rabbit hole if you will.

4GB 1 Rx x16
vs
4GB 1 Rx x8

Single sided vs double sided

4GB 1,2,3,4,8 Rx x16 single,double,quad,octal channel & single, double sided
vs
4GB 1,2,3,4,8 Rx x8 single,double,quad,octal channel & single, double sided
MHZ
CAS

Memory controller of Motherboard
Lanes of CPU
Voltage
ECC

Perhaps time to step into the room that builds chips circuit boards transistors.

128 bit pins not in the near future yet is that where this is going? Or is it going GHZ.

Someone go find a Terminator to explain this.
incorrect. x16 is the bank layout, doesn't matter how many chips on the dim. Could be all chips on one side, and still x16.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2bFzQTQ9aI

Explains it better. Though I don't agree with them that x16 is bad per se, it has its uses. But def not for gaming.

KITT can you explain this for this is basically for benefit of such a being.

| | | | is not the only way ram is chipped out. If data transfer is a swirl or a spiral or just a elliptical motion all of those plus more the mere feature of RANK has a lot to compete with.

Within a BANK is _______________________ Rows Columns? OR MORE BANKs?
Stacked BANKs in rows of columns themselves make a MODULE or a CHIP which is then noted as x8 x16 etc?
Depiction of BANK is a limited number unlike rows columns which is in the trillions is this how the definition explains best?

CHIP or is it Module is 1 and multiple chip/modules on a DIMM is also referred to as a BANK

RANK was probably typoed in one article since referred to that which is the total of BANKs..

For RANK to be RANK does all chips need to perform those operations or just the first Bank inside of a BAnk of Bank need to refresh when sent memory controller actions?

so a ROW of 4 chips 2 Columns ona circuit board contain in each one a bank of x16 or x8 that get sent fromm memory controller to read and transfer back out through either 1 2 3 4 8 lanes from itself into the memory controllers to buffer and send to controller on motherboard to then go to cpu.....

Need more exacting then MAGIC show youtube vid.

Please diagram schematic from the trillions of rows and columns and in between to next row and columns until finding it never left that space in the first part?
If you're unable to watch a video that explains it, that's on you. You don't make any sense in what you post, it's all jargon and nonsense, so maybe you should watch the video.

You were told how to learn what Ranks are, you refused to watch the video. You just spam nonsense in large blocks of text.
