POST takes longer after GPU upgrade?
Gigabyte Z97-HD3 motherboard, i7-4790K, 32 GB DDR3

I upgraded from GTX 1660 TI to RTX 3060 TI last week. POST is taking 15 or more seconds to even beep and show the Gigabyte splash screen. I never timed it, but it seems to be taking a whole lot longer and has me worried.

Is this because BIOS has more to "look at" with the new card?

update bios
make sure fast boot in bios is enabled (not windows quick boot)

Can you elaborate on "update bios" like I'm a dummy? That's one thing I've never done and I don't want to mess up.

I do know how to enter BIOS and enable fast boot there.

on the bottom corner of the board it will have a rev# 1.0/2.0/2.1

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z97-HD3-rev-10#ov
pick on that rev version near the top of the page
suppport -> scroll down to bios
download
unzip/extrat to usb stick
reboot boot to bios

pick update bios option, select the usb drive and file, then update

you have an a llittle older pc...still ddr3. i think you dont have uefi-bios. this may be the reason for the gpu, which is more modern and requires uefi-bios to work perfectly, to function best.
i wonder a little that the 3060 runs with your mainboard/ bios(legacy bios). i thought a modern gpu just doesnt run on a legacy bios...maybe someone else knows more. just to mention, i may be wrong...

That mainboard actually has UEFI. OP dodged a bullet there.

Thanks all.

Also, _I_:

Alas, no -- I don't know which fast boot to enable. From the manual:

BIOS Features / Fast Boot -- enable or disable Fast Boot to shorten the OS boot process. Ultra Fast provides the fastest bootup speed (Default: Disabled)

OR

Advanced Memory Settings / Memory Boot Mode -- Provide memory detection and training methods.
-Auto - Let the BIOS automatically configure this setting (Default)
-Enable Fast Boot - Skip memory detection and training in some specific criteria for faster memory boot
-Disable Fast Boot - Detect and train memory at every single boot

OR

Peripherals / Intel Rapid Start Technology -- enables or disables Intel Rapid Start Technology (Default: Disabled)

Which of these are you referring to?

I'm glad I dodged a bullet with the UEFI issue. I was only initially worried, after purchase and waiting for delivery, about the PCIe 4.0 vs. my 3.0 slots, but only until searching these threads for the related questions on that.

The card works beautifully. Every game from Forza Horizon 5 to Red Dead 2, ultra settings and DLSS, runs better than I even expected.

Now I have to go to the dollar store and buy a new USB stick, since the only one I have is a bootable Windows installer and I don't want to delete that.

UEFI was founded 2005, but this is a high end PC from 2013. Do the math guys.....I dont see no bullets.
@Masque
I wouldnt worry about 15 seconds.Youll get a little less performance on PCIE3.0 but were talking only a few %. Your GPU might get a little bottlecked on 1080p but everything else should run just fine.

Thanks, Schute_F

_I_ Well I have a new 32 GB usb drive, but I should have checked the BIOS version before I bought it. Only thirteen bucks but still. Bios is version F9, which is the latest on the Gigabyte support page you linked. Thanks, though.

So my only remaining questions are above, regarding fast boot.

enable fast boot, in bios
it will skip ram, drive and other tests during post that can take longer times

also check the boot order, and set it to boot from the ssd first

Thanks again. :amadeus_happy:
