90 FPS while retaining a whole lot of the quality. Hugely gets smoother than 60 but not as demanding as 120.
Goes for all singleplayer games around RPG/action/strategy. Heavily story-driven like Detroit Become Human barely has a lot of controls going on so 60 is fine.
Not to mention the particulars of the game being a factor. A fast pace FPS where maybe you're not able to stop and smell the roses, lower settings aren't going to matter and more FPS could be nicer.
There's no wrong answer.
But this reminds me of questions centering around AA, when it was brand new of GeForce 2's. 800x600 with 4x AA, or 1024x768 no AA?
The answer is still the same, which do you prefer?
Is it though ?
I completely agree with your comment about personal preferences and I also agree that 90-120FPS is some kind of a sweet spot, but one have to keep in mind that 60FPS on a 60hz monitor feel completely different than 60FPS on a 100/120/144/240hz monitor.
Therefore its really hard to make a final judgement. Ive recently played on a 60hz panel and it felt more like 30-40FPS on a 144hz display.
To answer OPs questions, I prefer quality over FPS, which means Ultra settings @50-80 FPS on 1440p/4K (simulators like MSFS2020&TSW2 @30-60FPS).
Im not into competetive games anymore, so nice visuals are to crucial to me.
I need some eye candy while playing those AAA games and even a fast paced game like Cyberpunk, feel totally smooth on 60FPS.
Ive to admit that I would definitely go for higher refresh rates and keep high visuals but there is no GPU out there which would be able to fulfill all my needs so Ive to compromise.
(Twenty years in the can I wanted manicott', but I compromised. I ate grilled cheese off the radiator instead - Sorry for the Sopranos quote, I couldnt help]
Im looking forward to the 4090 and still dreaming of being able to play AAA games on 5120×2160, with RT, max settings and refresh rates above 60FPS.
It will obviously take 2-3 generations but we will eventually get there. ^^
if its a 60hz monitor, stick to 60fps
Now I am at 4K on a 60Hz screen with a 3070 Ti, and I have no trouble maxing the settings on pretty much every game I play. And in a way, for me, the graphics look way better than they did when I was on a lower resolution screen with higher refresh rates. I am at 4K, my settings are maxed, and I get a constant 60 FPS in every game. No more, no less. And for me, it is butter. The visuals are amazing, and I get a really consistent frame rate.
In the next year, or two, I plan on upgrading display to at least a 4K 120Hz, and hopefully getting a GPU that will be able to push that 120, but I think I am at 4K for the remainder. I don't think I will go back down resolution. 4K visuals are amazing. Unless of course I get that Alienware QD-OLED 3440 X 1440 Ultrawide at 175Hz.
The reason is input response.
Even 60fps capped game like Tekken 7, display setting can be 120Hz.
FPS counter shows 60fps, but display timing is faster than 60Hz.
The fastest setting would be VSync=OFF, (Gsync=ON if Nvidia card and monitor is supported) and highest frequency on monitor support.
i recommend look up for older games. maybe pre 2012? not because of nostalgia bias (i don't have one, i just love older games) but because it's an older games so it run faster most of the time
i use max fps 60 for power saving. what does this mean? the pc uses the hardware for 60 fps only. hammenring the pc to max fps can become expensive. 60 hz gaming with v-sync on and max fps function of 60 frames per second is a little unsmooth comppared to high fps gaming, but who wants to pay too much, i said to myself and it is ok with 60 fps stable.
my2ct.
visual type games where gameplay takes a back seat.
