i7 2600k
I'm still rocking this CPU lol ive been using it for about 4 years since that's when i bought this PC and its honestly such a quality processor (it was second hand so this could have been used for 10+ years at this point). Works with most gpus until you start getting too expensive/powerful and can be picked up pretty cheap now (£36) Highly recommend

I suppose it’s down to what you need from it. I’m still running a 6700k on my desktop and it barely breaks a sweat for the games I play. My m1 MacBook Air blows it out of the water though when it comes to regression tasks! Sometimes as much as twice as fast.

Well, you could get a used 10100F for about 30-40 bucks, and a B460 for around the same price.
20-30 bucks more for 40-50% performane gain. Not a bad deal. ^^

In case of this being just a appreciation-thread, I do agree. It always depends on the individual and the games you want to play but the 2600k is still able to its job.
But it kind of applies to almost all CPUs, doesnt it ? Sandy, Ivy, Haswell(<3), Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby and Coffee, were talking only quality CPUs.
That does apply to AMD as well, except the Bulldozer mess. Everything which was published after that, is worth using even today.
I still have an i7-2600 (non k) paired with a 1080ti. Works great.

Obviously i bought it brand new in 2011 and it was a beast back then. It still holds up just fine, because of hyperthreading, unlike all the i5’s.

Yes, i7 2600k is good. But certainly not for 100 fps gaming. It will struggle to produce even 60 fps in some games, take Cyberpunk for example.
It's good for 60hz gaming but will show its age on anything demanding from the last few years, even when overclocked.

It is good if it is cheap, but l would recommend i7 4770K or i7 4790K or Old 6-8 cores Xeon.

Same with AMD's side, you can find Ryzen 7 1700X for 100$, Ryzen 5 1600 or Ryzen 5 2600 for 70$
Yeah they aren't bad today, but unless you have an old motherboard laying around for it, I wouldn't recommend it.

microcenter has some decent pcs with 6th gen i5/i7 for cheap (~$300+tax)
no room to add a dedicated gpu, but you could transplant it into a better case

no oc and limited on other upgrades, but cheap and still decent for 60fps gaming when paired with a good gpu

i would look for something newer tho
9th gen i5 or later, or ryzen 3600/5600
I have a sandy bulldozer that I can exhult to the max!:steamsalty:
i7 2600k is 55% slower than current gen i3-12100F (userbenchmark) which is a $100 cpu brand new. So, in today's standard, i7 2600k is 55% slower than even a bottom line cpu.

It's nice that 11 CPU's are still serviceable, and still having some value. But entry level hardware is gonna be a better bet in most cases.

Beggars can't be choosers I guess. And I've waded so deep into higher end hardware I can't imagine considering cutting corners that much.

But this is why I tend to give my retired systems away rather than sell them.

I mean it's an 11 year old CPU, that's to be expected. I don't know how accurate those results are though. Userbenchmark is know to mess with Benchmarks.

Userbenchmark is crap, nobody knows who the actual person or entity running that site, and it skews results in the worst way.

As for the 2600K, I think it's still a functional CPU even with modern games, one thing for sure, its 4C/8T is in better standing than, say, an 2500K with just 4C/4T. As long as framerate hits playable, it should be fine.

I have a SB-E CPU in the i7 3960X (6C/12T) + X79 mobo, with a Vega64 and games are just fine, I can't hit higher framerate than say, with a 12700K, but framerate is still good and quite playable. Plus, more stress is on my GPU as that system is hooked up to a 3440x1440 75Hz monitor. My HTPC (i7 4770K + GTX 1080) does 4K gaming just fine as well, ofc at 4k, needless to say I'm GPU bottlenecked. still does nicely with GoW (with FSR). It's all about managing expectations when gaming with older hardware.
"I'm still rocking" is cope, no exceptions
It is a good cpu for medium-low end games
