PS2 to 3 and 4
why didnt sony make it so the PS3 and 4 able to play ps2 games? the ps2 games were able to play ps1 game but needed a ps1 card to save game data, that and its own console not recognizing its own data is a serious flaw ITS THEIR CONSOLE but didnt allow to play older games? why? i mean my ps2 is hanging on a thread, the stupid thing cant read game disks i never had before or in awhile, i bought code lyoko and it wouldnt play, many tries later, it worked and ratchet and clank deadlock is doing the same, so i guess my ps2 is nearly done for.
some games play, others dont. ratchet wouldnt move at all by the game started. never have i seen a game behave like that before, menus are super delayed and he doesnt move. another time was when the batteries were dying that caused my payer to lag, super weird too but new batteries fixed that

Sure, I think doing it over again N64 might have gone with CD. And don't forget the 64DD...

That being said the N64 did OK. It outsold the Saturn 3:1, outsold the GameCube (PS2 DVD I guess) and the WiiU. I thought the WiiU was solid myself. But moment and consumers are fickle.

Yeah I never knew of it existing until I saw it on metal jesus video on it years ago, and it just blew me away thinking are they really gonna down the Sega path for slapping games together to get more content lol.

Yeah it crazy it sold more than gamecube, and what crazy gamecube was almost repeat of that gen, it beats PS2 hardware wise, but this time they went with a disc not having same issue as before which resulter Gamecube having better visual and shaders, but what weird they went for a minidvd disk for whatever odd reason compare to just using a normal DVD that PS2 was using, I assume it the whole marketing behind the cube size console, because I can't think of anything else why they would want a mini. Wii was alright, wasn't that amazing when came to X360, and PS3 that blows it out the water, but Wii U I do agree is solid when I tired it at friend place, but shocking it sold so low, and I assume because of Wii that under perform which people lean wanting more better & higher visuals, and because of the game selection. I never had the chance to grab a Wii U, but somehow I end up with two version if Wii one with gamecube support, and other lacks it ports.

I remember for us in the N64 circles thought the 64DD was gonna be neat. But then it didn't actually release in the U.S. I think chip prices ended up coming down so larger carts were more feasible. But a disk system had worked for them back in the early Famicom games. It was part of an initial plan for the system, and not goofy stop-gap addon conceived at end of life like the SegaCD and 32X for the Genesis. But I think we've seen those kind of hardware addons basically never succeed, not terribly well.

GameCube's proprietary disc was part anti-piracy measure. I have to assume with the timing that GameCube suffered a bit from the N64's baggage, more people had been sold on the PSOne and the PS2 was going to be solid successor, plus the built in DVD player. There wasn't much risk with going with the PS2, if you were going to choose one. Maybe Nintendo had lost their touch... going the way of Sega.

And Nintendo's strategy has always been that they're a toy maker, they're not trying to be the entertainment center. It's why the Wii and WiiU also didn't play DVD's. It's why they've not bothered trying to win on specs. It's expensive and hasn't yielded wild success for them, all their biggest successes have been modest hardware, affordable price, solid games. And they've proven that works pretty well for them. They've had wilder ups and downs compared to Playstation releases, but I dunno, you know what the PS6 is gonna be. Maybe not to sure what the next Nintendo system is going to be, at best it's 50/50 it'll simply be an improved Switch. But it could be some other bold new experiment and we just don't know yet. I'd buy a souped up Switch. I'll be the other option too if there's any merit to it whatsoever.

Some ps3 have a hardware that can play ps2, but ps4 and ps5 does not have hardware. To play ps2 disc on ps5, it would need an emulator to support a virtual Emotion Engine or modified the ps2 code. Modified hardware is also possible needed. That would be most challenge.

Disc physical can't be modified, unless it is come from the original copy stored in their business.

Different console have different OS, specialized hardware, different graphics API etc. Games are developed and optimized for those particular subjects.

You can't just run one console's game into another, it will need lots of optimization, money and effort. That's the reason console version of games don't work on PC, even after their DRM has been cracked, and despite having 20 times more powerful hardware in PC.
PC still can't run 10 years old God of War 3 without graphical glitch and stuttering.

Not true.

A lot of ps2 emulator for pc on YouTube should proved. However, you must still own a license to play a game which is physical disc.

Well Cloud Boy said a lot, and responding "Not true" to all of it is a gross oversimplification.

It's not just as simple as go grab some PS2 emulator and slap that on the PS5. It's going to take time, money, testing. Lots of work. Because the expectations on Sony to provide a refined and tested and working experience is high.

If you do it yourself on your PC, you're on your own, you know it, it's a whole different ballgame and a different set of expectations.

It may seem like a simple thing, but the devil's in the details and the details are where all the cost comes in. And it's not like Sony forgot about the PS2 or doesn't know emulation exist. So at the moment it would seem to not be a priority for them, or maybe not a feature that really has that much value. If that changes, sure they could manage it if that's what they wanted to do. But no amount of user based convenience trivialization will make it something they want to do.
