Steam OS 3.0 for PC
I've been loving my Steam Deck and Steam OS 3.0!
Later this year I plan on building a new PC and want to install Steam OS 3.0 onto it. I'm so tired of Windows and Steam OS works so incredibly well that I'd like to ditch Windows entirely. I guess this would make my new PC a Steam Machine. Anyway, I know Steam OS 3.0 isn't officially released yet for PC but apparently there are ways to install it.
I'm wondering if anyone has done so and what kind of experience they've had. If I do so myself (assuming Valve doesn't launch the OS officially by then) do you think I should dual-boot with Windows 11? And when Valve officially launch Steam OS 3.0 on for PC could my PC, or saves suffer? What are the risks?

The Steam Deck is preconfigured with quite a few safety restrictions to keep users from accidentally bricking things.

If you make a full installation, you'll want to print a cheatsheet of commands and learn how sudo and chmod and full package managers work and how to recover a broken xorg or wayland or GRUB.

Just get any other Linux distribution, they will deliver a similar gaming experience.

If you really insist on running SteamOS you will have to wait for the official platform independant images to release. The current available images are build specifically for the Steam Deck, thus it does not have drivers for other hardware configurations.

You can install the Steam OS GUI via your Steam Client if you want its interface.

With respect, any old linux platform will not give the same premium gaming experience as Steam OS.

"Old Linux platform"?

SteamOS is litterally just Arch Linux with Steam Big Picture 2.0 as the default GUI. Anything SteamOS does can be done on other distributions as well.

No, no, no. It doesn't work like that here. I at least expect you to tell me why you hold these viewpoints and opinions.

That depends on what you mean by "premium gaming experience".

If a premium gaming experience to you means the controller and small-screen friendly user interface built into SteamOS 3.0, then you're correct. You're not going to get that on any other Linux distro. (Yet.) Eventually that interface will replace the current Big Picture mode though, and then we'll have it everywhere.

If a premium gaming experience is the ability to run PC games and run them well, then it doesn't really matter. The magic there isn't in SteamOS, it's in Steam itself and the wonderful compatibility layer known as Proton. You can happily pick your distro, install Steam and game away.

If you want to use your computer for more than just playing games on Steam, there are better Linux distros than SteamOS for that purpose. If you want to, like you said, run a "Steam Machine", then more power to you. Have fun.

Sounds complicated. I've been reading up the steam page and Valve only recommend very tech savvy people to even attempt it.

"Because I like Steam OS. Too bad if you can't agree with me."

There you go.

OP said nothing about personal preference. OP mentioned "old" and "premium" suggesting he is not knowledgeable on this topic and is just throwing random crap in a poor attempt to get put in the right.

Yes, exactly, the former.

Hey! Was looking for a Solution (Linux / SteamOS) for my Living Room PC and this does the job very well. Give it a try:

That’s very interesting although not being able to dual boot is dealbreaker for me. I can’t completely abandon the desktop experience.
