good upgrade from an i5 8600k
I5 8600k
gtx 1070
16gb 3200mhz

i know the GPU could use an upgrade
but i'm only looking for CPU upgrades
AMD or Intel. whatever is the better deal.

i mainly play RUST and other Heavily single thread games.

budget is whatever.

At the end of the day, if you're unhappy with your performance, your best options if you need more single-core performance would an Intel 12th generation, Ryzen 5 5800X3D (variable), and Zen 3, roughly in that order, with the 5800X3D being an unknown as it's either above the 12th generation or comparable to Zen 3, depending on the task.

After that is the Intel 10th/11th generation, then Zen 2, which is similar to yours in single-core performance (higher actual IPC but less clock speed, so potentially less overall if you're at 5 GHz). All of these would be too low compared to what you got/too old to consider new today, really.

If you don't need more cores, a Core i5 12x00 or Ryzen 5 5600X are about your best options in that order. The 12400 is typically a phenomenal value, but I'm not sure if it has a small enough performance difference worth the 12600K to make it worth choosing over it, especially if you're already on an overclocked CPU. The 12600K might be more worth the extra in that case. The Ryzen 5 5800X (despite offering more cores than you may need) could be faster, or not. I'm not sure how it behaves in Rust, but from an earlier post, it seems like it's one of those games where, despite being a CPU heavy game, it's just so heavy even on the fastest and" might not be worth a change, even if they are faster". I'm not familiar with Rust but it sounds like Minecraft in that regard. There are conditions in that game that are so heavy it'd make something theoretically like four times faster in single-threaded STILL be a possible limitation. If you're willing t spend on it though, out of what's available today, those are your best options.

8600k should be able to handle any game you can throw at it
how is the cooling?

12600k would be a nice jump, but needs new mobo and maybe ram

Far bigger benefit from GPU upgrade instead of CPU here.
Dr.Shadowds 🐉 Jun 4, 2022 @ 6:11am
I say wait awhile before jumping to upgrade. Right now we're suppose to get dumb bump in GPU performance for RTX 4000 series and RX 7000 series, and if going for high end, then want i7, or R7 series cpu of the newest gen.

ATM there new AMD cpu coming out that said to have some AI added, no idea what that about as not out yet, and no ideal what that provides in performance for gaming. So if it happen to be some kind of a boost in performance, or game changer, then wait a gen after it to get the best benefits when it refine.

But if asking, and really want to upgrade right now, then i7 12700k, or 12900 will actually be an upgrade for you, and you will need replace motherboard, and RAM.

I'm still rocking a 8700k@5.0 in my main rig with a 3080, I have yet to run into a game that my rig has problems with. I've thought about upgrading many times but intel 10th and 11th gen are more side grades, same with AMD 5000 series. The 12th gen intel came along and actually gave me a good enough perfomance bump to justify a upgrade but DDR5 prices killed that quick, I know I could just get a D4 board but I feel DDR5 is a big part of the upgrade.

I'm personally going to wait for intel raptor lake (13th gen) or AMD Raphael 7000 series to launch before I consider an upgrade at this point.

What are your goal with your rig, do you play at 1080p high refresh rate or do you play at a higher resolution? With a 1070 id say upgrade the GPU before CPU, something like a 1080 ti if you don't care about raytracing or a 3060 ti/3070 if you want raytracing.

You want a new CPU, usually I5 12400F is good enough

No need to upgrade for now if it is used for gaming only without eSports.

But if you want to have bragging rights, you will need to have some $2000 to spend at least.

agreed, single core wise the 12gen is all the same.
Your GTX 1070 is well matched with the 8600k. That CPU is just a 6 core/ 6 thread CPU which has same performance as old 4c/8t CPUs from 6th or 7th gen intel. Though it's still good for around 60 fps gaming but don't expect anything more. Any decent Current gen GPU like 3060 Ti will be bottlenecked hard.

What about upgrading to the 8700k? or even the 9xxx series?
Otherwise you'll have to buy a new CPU, Motherboard AND possibly RAM depending on the board you go with..

Jumping to 9000 series doesn't have any sense. Same for 8700K, you are playing single thead games, but you are receaving hyper threading #JustToHave?

Ryzen 5 5500 also is a good CPU but he needs an older one

For just 300$ New CPU and new mobo

8600K is still fine for games like Rust, you should be more concerned with getting a better GPU, the 1070 is quickly approaching "entry level" territory.

I'd get at least a 3060 or 6600-XT. Both are on a similar performance level to a 1080 Ti, much faster than a 1070.

Well just viewing OP game list, he doesn't seem in need of upgrade truely because all the games he playing is can easily get him over 60FPS ~ 100 FPS.

FYI if start using higher resolution, let say moving 1080p to 1440p, or 4k, you would focus more on GPU rather than CPU because as you go up resolution, the hardware resorces becomes more demanding on GPU instead of CPU. But if sticking to 1080p, and trying go get high refresh rate like 144hz, or higher then that where CPU matters more than GPU in that area, but of course both matter just that CPU is the chocker in that area when pushing more hz, instead of resolution, in your case you have an unlock CPU, that 6 cores that can do 5GHz, so really yeah not a problem really if going for 144hz with the 1070. I know because I also have it, but had the 6700k, and recently upgrade it to 11400, still exactly what it is you don't have much of a problem with your current games from your list OP.

With a motherboard BIOS update you could get away with upgrading to an i9-9900K, although you'll have to make sure to have decent cooling. But now that it is older, you most likely will have to get one second hand if you want a good price. Honestly though you are better off getting a better GPU for gaming performance, unless you are doing a bunch of multi tasking like streaming while gaming too.

I'm just looking for a CPU upgrade (i don't mind AMD or Intel, changing mobo and getting new ram) but i'm wanting a CPU that has alot better Single thread performance
as i mainly play RUST and that's what it benefits the most from.

ill upgrade the GPU at a later point, rust doesn't need anymore GPU power then a 1070 for 1080p max settings, it sits at like 60% usage at around 100fps. im totally CPU bound
and i'd like to get above 144fps all the time.

Is your CPU hitting 100% usage in RUST?
