Not sure about Quake 4, I don't believe it has native controller support on PC. Not without an external mod anyway. I don't think the original Doom 3 support it either, but Doom 3 BFG does.

For many years HL2 has lacked gamepad support on PC, but apparently it now supports controllers. I think you have to add it as a launch command though for now.

I don't think the original Far Cry supports controllers natively on PC.

Remember, Xbox 360 controllers either have to be fully wired (not plugged in with a Play & Charge) or connected via the Xbox 360 gaming receiver to work. Unlike the Xbox One/Series controllers, you can't turn wireless Xbox controllers into wired ones.

yes

steam can use an x360, mapped as xbox or remapped to k/m or other inputs

360 vs XBO don't have much difference of compatability on Windows PC

i finished Quake 4 a week ago . For modern textures , a config file must be edited . The game is so so . The drawback is that there s no compass . And sometimes too much violent images .

quake 4 should be playable with a controller template of some kind

i cannot think of a single game on steam right now that cannot be made raring to go with some effort in steam's controller settings

Are almost any game basic controls, like forward backwards etc... automatically remap to the xbox360 controller on a PC ?

For games with controller support, yes.

For a game like Quake4, no. You have to use a controller config via Steam BigPictureMode
ya use mine all the time

The 360 controller is my favorite. It’s worked with every game that is meant for controllers. If it doesn’t support controllers you might need to do some work to use it on those.

Aside from barbarically putting the thumbstick in the wrong place and horrendous input lag, controllers that only support the worthless xinput standard aren't worth the plastic they're molded from.

A controller mapping utility isn't an external mod. They're common and even essential tools, though standalone ones aren't really necessary anymore since Steam does it natively now.

I still prefer the opensource Antimicro and AntimicroX over Steam's controller mapping settings. Much more intuitive when setting up a macro.

The 8bitdo controllers are now my go to for PC controller gaming.

No, as it lacks the analog triggers an XBox controller has. So it will be a problem for example in racing/driving games where an analog input would be very desired.

Otherwise, yes.

The triggers are analog with the controller in Xinput mode.
