4 TB SATA 7200 rpm Hard Drive problem

I have 4 drives. 3 hard drives 7200 rpm and one NVMe drive.

My problem is my main data 4 TB 7200 rpm drive. When I go to it sometimes it freezes for a split second up to 5 seconds until it is usable. (Feels more like 10 seconds to 30 seconds but I know it really is not) It is not full about 2 TB used.

Yes I have it backed up.

One of my hard drives is a WD My Book 4 TB Hard Drive which is connected to my pc by USB. It is the drive to back up my main 4 TB data hard drive.

Should I try disconnecting the USB backup drive to see if it helps or that can't be the issue ?

All my other drives, even the USB backup drive, seems to respond instantly. No delay.

Are you sure the power plan is not simply turning it off and the system wants to access data and then has to wait until it spun up again?

Yes I turned that off.

Plus none of the other two 7200 rpm hard drives do this.

Try putting the drive on sata 0 or 1 then retest it. Use CrystalDiskMark to benchmark it.

WD Black HDD tend to have longer spin ups but are super fast reads and writes once spun up

Switched it to SATA 1 think it was on SATA 2 but not 100% sure.

Don't care about the other old 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive being on SATA 2 instead.


So far looks like it is working better now the 4 TB Hard drive 7200 rpm on SATA 1.

the port number will not make any diff on its performance

but check the mobo manual to see what ports are disabled when using a m.2 drive

For most systems, yes.

Worth adding that there are some systems from around the time SATA III was new that they included a mix of SATA II and SATA III, so usually it was a couple of SATA ports (0 and 1) that were SATA III, and the rest might be SATA II. My last board was like that, first two were SATA III, next two were SATA II, and the final two were SATA II provided by a separate chipset (is this still a thing or do CPUs have enough to natively provide for all SATA ports in the case of six port motherboards now?).

Not the case with OP's system given it's not that old, and won't matter in the case of hard drives for the most part (even SATA I is good for most of them), but adding it for clarity.

Is there anyway I can keep the hard drive active or in use automatically ever 1 or 2 minutes or would that not be recommended ?

It is the only way I can see how not making it freeze.

It sounds like you have some other problem. If the power plan is set to never spin it down, then unless you actually hear it spinning down, and when these freezes occur, spinning back up, then that's not the problem with it.

If the problem is consistent to that drive only, and not other drives, and regardless of SATA port, then I'd be considering if it's an issue with the drive itself.

How old is the drive?
Going by the number of power on hours it shows in your CrystalDiskInfo screenshot; that is roughly 4 years of runtime. Is the drive older then that though? WD Black have a 5-year warranty.
