How do you disable telemetry?
I can't stop Microsoft phoning home all the time. I've tried using Winaero Tweaker, for a time my machine ran beautifully, 1% CPU usage, FPS were fantastic in games... but without warning the d@mn thing turned itself back on several hours later into the day when watching a YouTube video.

Bill Gates keeps looking at my pictures of peaches and eggplants. I'm going to horny jail at this rate if I don't take my privacy back.

Those OS things turn back on after various OS updates.

After kernel or feature updates are fully applied and PC been rebooted and updates are all done, run that tweaker software again and do a check for updates to ensure its up to date. It might take some time for the app maker to update it to support whatever changes MS may have made. Sometimes certain OS settings simply get reset after certain OS updates is all.

ShutUp10 is also a good app for this and supports Win10 and 11

Check if you have "optional diagnostic data" enabled in Settings app/Privacy/Diagnostics and Feedback. That's Micro's euphemism for "full telemetry" like your Edge browser info (if you run Edge).

You mention Winaero Tweaker--did you know about his various commandlines to stop advertising telemetry by blocking outbound calls in Windows Firewall.

I've been using this for about five years now and it seems it's still relevant and is also supporting Windows 11.

https://winaero.com/stop-windows-10-spying-on-you-using-just-windows-firewall/

ShutUp10 is a very well known app as mentioned. Another less-known app that I personally have not used is Private Win10. Here's a description:

https://www.thewindowsclub.com/privatewin10-advanced-windows-10-privacy-tool

I mention this one b/c it's from the genius developer of the new Sandboxie Plus which I do use and would not be without. Note: SBIE free is not privacy-focused.

I get occasional nags for like Windows 11 but it's been pretty much ad-free. Sorry for long post, this happens to be an interest of mine. :steamhappy:

If you are so worried about privacy, we can find a lot more about you from your post history than Microsoft could even hope to have visibility of.

Your last sentence could be very telling, and the info you gave is a lot more valuable for investigative purposes than anonymized diagnostic data that has been decoupled from its source.

Well in the windows terms and conditions, they are allowed to spy on you.
In windows itself, there are limits to what you can do.
Maybe look into network wide privacy. pihole is a popular choice.

My main machine is dual boot windows/linux. Windows for gaming only & linux for all else. Maybe something else to consider.

If you think windows is bad, maybe look into what your smart'' TV is up to if you have one.
You don't even need a Pi-Hole you can actually find out what ports it uses for the Telemetry and such and block them right in Windows Firewall. You can also turn much of it off easily through Group Policy; but that requires Windows Pro, which is what you should be installing anyways.

Overall, I hope you don't have a SMART TV that has a built-in webcam, or anything from Amazon like Alexa or Echo; which watch and listen 24/7

In addition, this app can reveal what data is collected by Windows: https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/diagnostic-data-viewer/9N8WTRRSQ8F7
Not really a need to sit around and do all of that, just disable everything in Windows to do with data collection or telemetry; very simple. However many get frustrated with the fact that OS settings get reset from time to time. That's been the norm for quite some time, as Kernel or Feature updates add or change various OS features as a whole, the end result is that those changes will then have the settings for that change-up getting reset. So some settings you changed manually or things you have disabled will get reset.

Again normal. Something that is nothing new to Windows Updates process.

Win10 came out in 2015 and we've pretty much gotten used to how Feature Updates work and change things. Here we are 7 years later and yet you see people who get mad when settings get reset all on their own. Really?

Windows Update Blocker may help for prevending unwanted update.

But last week, one machine got weired frame dropping. I could not resolve until update all pending Windows Update. So it may has still some issues.

If you wish to trust microsoft, then that is your concern. Not me.
So windows - gaming only - minimal web browsing using firefox with noscript,, ublock origin and https everywhere. A regular run of windows de-bloat script.

Linux - general use - also same setup with firefox for browsing, No propietry drivers/software.

Smart TV: A pihole server all for its self. Everything at DNS level blocked by default. Only the specific applications I use are allowed through. This was a little tricky, but worth it how much it likes to call home. No camera.

A pihole for the general network. About 2 million domains blocked.
Both instances of pihole go through unbound to stop ISP DNS issues (tracking, redirect, being too slow)
All standard outside dns servers blocked.
Oh and pfsense router for firewall and IP based blocking.

Ah, yeah, that malware is pretty subborn isn't it. Personally I just went ahead and re-partitioned the drive with EndeavourOS, that seems to have kept it at bay, but I still get nightmares that the next time I turn on my computer, I'll get stuck waiting for a windows update.

I'm surprised nobody ever mentions mainly blackbird, debloater or decrapifier. Shutup10 is good for most users without the risk of breaking things.
You should not need to Block any Windows Updates.
First off configure Windows Updates in a better way then what the defaults are.

Disable Auto Driver Download/Install from Windows Updates.

Configure WU to never share the updating process via Internet or Local Network.

Make sure it is set to ask you before restarting after updates have applied.

You can also Pause WU for up to 28 days. As a means of temp-avoiding new updates coming out that you want to at first, avoid them in case MS happens to output a bugged update that may require them to later pull or release a hot-fix for. That is a good way to look at why you would use the Pause Windows Updates option.

Windows Updates tend to release approx every 2nd Tuesday of each month; so be ready for that before it comes.

A Pi-Hole is still a very good idea to implement because you will have better overall control of Ports and Domain blocking; and this not just helps your Windows PC user experience, but allows you the means to block ads and such from hitting your Mobile devices (even iOS/Android devices) as well whenever those are connected to your local WiFi.

As I and others have said before, you cannot evade Micro's telemetry completely. It's just not possible. A primary reason is that we feed Micro the data it needs to continue developing its products in the form of "required" diagnostic data. We Insiders also provide lots because we are required to have the full telemetry enabled (I actually don't care very much since I refuse the Edge browser).

Those operating system "upgrades" had better be "free"--God knows we've paid for their use umpty times already.
