Report a translation problem
The game uses what it needs.
With this game i do. It's the only way to get it to play on windows 7 x64 even with compatabilty set to windows xp. The in game graphics are all triangles and blurs.
I have never run in to an issue with a game where I had to disable cores, and I regularly still play the classics.

It's likely caused by a weird GPU driver bug.
Try right clicking the game in the task manager and setting the processor affinity to only 1 core. This might be an easier way of doing this.
