Help with Overclocking a Pentium iii
Hello again!

So about a week ago, I asked you nice folk for help in picking out a PSU for fixing up an older computer of mine.

Yesterday, that Power supply arrived, and the computer is working (almost) flawlessly! When left idle, it seems to restart on its own after awhile. But that’s not the point of this.

I need help in figuring out how to software overclock my Pentium 3 866Mhz~ running on an Intel D815EEA.

My only experience with overclocking is with my i5 6600k through the mobo, but seeing as the FSB is locked on Intel boards, well.. Yeah.

Thanks!

Those old cpus like Pentium III are overclocked through FSB.
You enter the BIOS, and change the FSB value.

The maximum multiplier is usually 8x. So the stock FSB is 108.25
108,25 x 8 = 866Mhz.

Thus, if you set the FSB to 120, you would be running 125 x 8 = 1000Mhz.
Just play with FSB until you find good overclock.

Well, new problem. Haven’t touched anything in regards to the CPU yet, but when I went to turn it on to do so, well.. nothing. I pressed the power button and it simply refuses to turn on.

Could be that motherboard is dead. Or at worst case scenario: the cpu chip has cracked.

Just took a look inside, seemed to be that the main ATX 24 pin power cable got loose somehow. Despite being exactly still the entire time. Reseated and now it works like a charm!

Anyway, back from the late halloween scare..

I took a look in the BIOS settings earlier, and found that there was no FSB multiplier anywhere. Looking on forums, it seems Intel mobos we’re locked against that. However I kept finding mention of software overclocking. But no matter where I look, I can’t seem to find any instructions to actually do so with this mobo and cpu specifically.

Some people seem to have used a software called CPUFSB.

Just downloaded it and put it on the machine, closest I could get for a mobile selection was the D815EEA2. And when I tried using its feature to auto find the PLL, it said it could damage the system.

If you can't get a software solution to work, this is going to be your most limiting factor. Brings me back to the good old days, my Celeron 300A easily hit 450Mhz - my weapon of choice was the Abit BH6 for simple FSB boosing in BIOS.

many of the old boards socket 7,a slot 1-2-a use jumpers to set the fsb/multi/cpu voltage
read the board and see what all the jumpers/dip switches do

sorry to tell ya but not all intel motherboards support overclocking
i have an old P4 intel board the old bios does not support overclocking at all

so your stuck at defualt clock speeds on those older chpsets

your board drivers and bios are listed here .. last bios was from 2001

D815EEA

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/3317/Intel-Desktop-Board-D815EEA

your better off maxing out that CPU on that board and ram and call it a day if you want to resurrect an old system .. that can not play games of today

really just throw it away ....an build a new system if you wanna play any games newer then 2003

and do not expect windows 10 to run at all ..maybe win 7 ..but boards that old were better with win XP ..and no you do not wanna install that OS on anything connected to the internet

my old P 3 933 system still runs win 99 SE ..its never been connected to the internet
and holds my vodoo 5 5500 card and old Sound blaster AWE 64 isa card

its only good for doom 1 and 2 and duke nukem 3d anf the first unreal games and old red alert games and command an counquer

also on boards that old check your caps .. one popping cap can take out the NB or SB of the board ..and fry all your stuff ..including your old ram..that can be pricey to replace
