For 5900X just need to ensure it has very good VRMs on the board.
There is no point in waiting unless you don't mind switching to more expensive DDR5 RAM
I need a X570 for my needs. I can spend up to 400. I got my previous mobo with a discount. So its not a huge loss. How much more expensive will DDR5 will be over DDR4?
I don't mind waiting. I still have a back-up laptop that i could use in the meantime.
I'd suggest MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI or MSI MEG X570 UNIFY, they're in the same price range but the UNIFY series is usually higher up on their product stack. MSI seems to be the best overall for motherboards these days, ASUS has too many problems because they've gotten sloppy and greedy and their support is god awful, same with Gigabyte. MSI's support isn't perfect but it's not as bad, and their motherboards are often the best in their respective price ranges, the Tomahawk series in particular is good for that. Unify is great for overclocking memory.
The true gaps between Zen3 and Zen4 won't really be seen until the benchmarks come out, and even then, there's more 3D V-Cache SKUs coming later on after the initial launch, which will probably be a huge difference considering that AMD is really pushing their core frequencies up in addition to the increase in IPC. The 7950X is rumored to be able to reach 5.85 GHz on a single core F-max clock.
Thanks for the detailed post. I will pick up a X570 motherboard very soon.
Intel's going to have to work a bit hard if they're going to beat that, because none of these SKUs have 3D V-cache, which is coming back later, which they most likely won't be able to beat if they don't increase the cache capacity (and/or make huge improvements to how their cache works) with Raptor Lake. I don't think things will get really interesting until Meteor Lake.
AMD announced 13% increase in IPC, and 25% increase in single thread which was mostly due to increased Hz. That still leaves AMD behind 12th gen depending on the cpu model. AMD's biggest weakness is floating point and that has increased by only 1%.
It can beat 12900k at gaming but takes more cpu threads to do it. So that means the game has be capable of using the threads.
The 5.whatever Hz is 1 core.
Plus the claim was that the 7950X is the fastest cpu in the world. I always thought that Fujitsu's 48 core cpus held that title as used in the Fugaku supercomputer. Before that I thought it was Fujitsu's custom Solaris cpus as in superclusters. So I call BS on that one. I could be wrong.
A Chinese guy released 13th gen fps benchmarks about a week ago. For RDR2 at 4k the minimum fps for 12700k/13700k was 48 vs 60. No change in max fps due to gpu bottlenecking.
But unless faster gpus are released there isn't a reason to upgrade and even then it's probably only 4k and maybe e-sports. Once the fps goes over the refresh rate it causes tearing which only e-sports guys tolerate afaik.
Brand loyalty is more important to most buyers.
My wife had an msi motherboard. One day it wasn't working so she was working on it making sure the power cords was attached to the mother board she turned it on to try it and one of the mosfets blew and a chunk hit her under the eye. I will not buy another msi motherboard and got her a gigabyte. So stay away from msi their motherboards explode. I work on pcs for a living and that is the only time I seen a mosfet explode like that. Poor junk mosfets msi uses and their support is non existing. I got me an asus crosshair viii hero x570 and it's a great board highly suggest.
My Previous motherboard was a Asus Dark Hero X570. It died after 14 months. And Asus RMA is a nightmare. They blame it on the costumer. Never Asus Again.
I've dealt with MSI support many times. And so far its been very positive. All the RMA's i've send in went smooth. I guess it really depends on region to region. I'm currently using a MSi
Laptop for the Past 6 years. And i had to fix it once because the hinge broke off. After sending it in, they've replaced the whole outer shell with no extra cost attached to it.
A friend of mine is using an Intel Z590 from MSi and he's been very positive about it. He basically bought it about the same time i bought my Asus Board. And his is still kicking while mine is dead.
I already have a pair of DDR4 3600Mhz from corsair. But kinda waiting for the prices to go down a bit.
