Problems with my laptop fan
Does anyone have any advice on how to diagnose problems with a laptop fan? I have an HP Omen 16 gaming laptop which is just a couple months old and the right fan has started to make a grinding noise on occasion.

I've opened the laptop up and cleaned as much as I could, I dont feel confident enough to take the laptop apart completely. But the problem persists. HP have offered to collect it and fix it but stated it could take up to 10 working days but I work from home and need my laptop here.

That's a pickle. Not confident enough to fix it yourself, but don't want to send it out for repair because it means being without a laptop for a couple of weeks.

You're going to have to bite the bullet and pick one or the other. I recommend the latter, because if you screw something up, it's on you. If HP does, it's on them, and they generally know what they're doing.

May I recommend packing a bag of candy when you send it out along with a nice, handwritten note thanking them for taking care of your computer. They remember this stuff, and chances are you'll get your computer back faster.

I was thinking that might be the only option. The sweets and note might be a good idea. I might see if I can twist their arm and have them send me a replacement instead.

Common thing when the fan goes it'll start making noise, basically needs to be replaced and if it's still covered then worth getting them to do it though I would check the warranty or call them cause sometimes they do offer onsite repairs or you might have a repair centre close by but otherwise it is a hassle. Also no idea how good they are these days with the estimated 10 days but always plan for the worst case in my experience as it's for your work.

Ok the fan is bad, replace it. Why is it so hard?

A cooling mat/pad for a laptop is designed to supplement, not replace the internal cooling of a laptop, they cannot and never will.

OP, just had a look at some YT videos and sadly it looks like the heatsink assembly has to be removed in order to remove either of the fans as there are screws attaching the fans located behind heatpipes.

Your only options are...
A/ Live with it, but it will likely eventually fail, and if you don't want to DIY then it's best to B
B/ Return for warranty repair
C/ DIY but you will need some TiM clean and thermal paste as well as a new fan

You don't need any app for this what-so-ever. You can do this right within Windows Power Options.

How you Laptop Fan(s) function is all predetermined within the BIOS Firmware.

That's a rather stupid move if the device is still under warranty. Let's hope HP doesn't care or notice and refuses warranty repair cause normally this voids warranty and then you can replace the internal fan(s) yourself.

Those "Warranty Void if Removed" stickers are completely illegal.

I've done this hundreds of times. It's does not void the warranty. As long as you don't physically break something in the process.
