Strange "grid-like" pattern on shadows? (GTX 1070)
I've noticed this happening in two games so far. Primarily Black Ops 3, and secondly Skyrim Special Edition.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like in BO3 (may need to zoom in on the image): https://imgur.com/F9GJfYL

It's only really noticeable on grass/trees in both games, and changing shadow quality to low in BO3 completely solves the problem, but at the cost of making the game look worse of course.

Is this caused by any known setting, or is something wrong with my GPU?

I don't know.

What I do know though is that the games aren't actually ray-traced and hence look and act like reality but rather cheating and approximating the correct effects. You can for instance get shadows which looks like large pixels in the shape of some other object rather than soft shadows and edges and smooth curves following the intended shape of the object which generate the shadow.

To me it wasn't really visible what you meant at first. Whatever it's as intended or not I don't know.

Putting it short and useful, I couldn't exactly spot the issue. Perhaps it's the monitor and not the GPU? Also, it could be NVIDIA Ansel running...try uninstalling GEForce Experience and resetting the NVIDIA control panel settings to all default.

I don't know what the issue is but ..

Could be the video card isn't recognized by the game as high end...so it restricts settings as a result in spite of what is set.

Did you zoom in on the image? The rock straight to the left of the hand in the picture is where it's most noticeable. I also notice the whole "grid" thing whenever distant objects are loading while I'm venturing through the world in Skyrim, if that helps narrow it down any.

Sorry for the late reply, but I've had GeForce Experience uninstalled for some time now. What's "NVIDIA Ansel"?

No worries. No GFE means no Ansel. Ansel was a feature of Geforce Experience that allowed you to move the camera around and rewind animation frames of abfame you're playing so you can take screenshots at just the right moment.

As far as the issue, it's probably just that the game doesn't have your video card listed as one of the pooled options for certain features...so it places it in a "generic" category. How to make it recognize Bo3 with full features is beyond me, but it requires the hex ID of your video card and it's GPU model.
