Is Asus Prime Z690-A a good motherboard?
Combined with
i7-12700K
RTX 3070Ti
Kingston Fury Beast Black 2x16 GB 4800MHz DDR5 CL38 DIMM
Samsung 980 Pro Heatsink 2 TB

No, Prime is entry level series of ASUS motherboards. For gaming you will be better with TUF series, Z690 or even B660.

agree
Z690 is bit of a odd thing when it comes to pricing and features compared to other chipsets.
Asus Prime Z690-A is not exactly economy board when it comes to features.
The economy version is Asus Prime Z690-P.

So the guy in the video says it's a good board.

Any other board recomendation that would work well with the setup in OP?

You should look for D4 boards if you dont want to spend money on DDR5. This ram is horrible slow compare to even decent DDR4. You pay less and get much better performance.

look for a z6xx board with 10+ choke coils (bricks) and heatsinks near them

this is not enough

3 to the left of the socket, and 5 above = 8 phases total
cpu needs atleast 1 for imc, and 1 for igpu, that leaves 6 for cpu cores, x ~25w = 125w cpu limit

this has 10, better but not great

this is much better
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/GvmmP6/msi-pro-z690-a-ddr4-atx-lga1700-motherboard-pro-z690-a-ddr4
8 on top + 7 on left = 15, -2 igpu -1 imc = 12 to cpu x25w = 300w to cpu cores

the ASUS Prime Z690-A looks to have more than enough also
if it has all of the features you need its a good choice

Despite some Prime mobos are not good - VRM temp too high , this one is good - 16+1 phase VRM and reaches only 64C under load !

Yep, probably best to forget the DDR5 until they actually get it working properly and go for something like MSI MAG Z690 Tomahawk WIFI DDR4 with DDR4 RAM saving yourself both money and headache.

my opinion: up to 64 gb ddr4 computers are running well enough. them dont need ddr5

Where lies the problem with DDR 5 not doing good, what's the cause of it?

New tech, manufacturers went to extra high RAM speeds and XMP has problems working with them since it`s not properly updated yet. There are issues with not booting when XMP is enabled, not getting the advertised speeds, RAM sticks not working together even if they are exactly same kits etc.
Big no no seems to be buying two dual kits to fill four RAM slots, altough they maybe exactly the same they don`t want to work together so safest bet for DDR5 is to go with only one dual stick kit.
In the nutshell it`s just new tech and has bunch of issues before it becomes more widespread and reliable. Intel 12th gen is currently only ones using it.

Well this is probably going to be a stupid question, but does it make sense to get a board supporting DDR5 and stick DDR4s in it for now?

Doesn`t work like that, slots are not compatible.

Well that sucks.
Guess I'll stick to 4s then.

Thanks for the answers.
