What do you think about this custom budget PC gaming?
Hi,

I am asking your opinion about this set up:
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/s33xcb

I haven't decided on the cooler and casing yet. I don't mind picking an entry level set up, because currently I am using i7 3770 and 650 ti boost. I am happy with a small upgrade from current system. Current desktop was built from 2013. I am also using desktop PC for digital art as a hobby.

All price in Australian dollar from Scorptec PC shop:

Intel Core i5 10400 $219

ASUS TUF GAMING B560M-PLUS WIFI Motherboard $189

Corsair Vengeance RGB RS CMG16GX4M2D3600C18 16GB (2x8GB) 3600MHz DDR4 is $119

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB M.2 NVMe SSD $99

Western Digital WD Blue 500GB 2.5" SATA HDD, WD5000LPZX $65

ZOTAC GAMING GeForce GTX 1650 Low Profile, 4GB GDDR6 $349
(I read that super is better than regular, but no stock of super in scorptec PC shop)

Corsair RM550x 550W Power Supply $149

I am using an existing monitor

Total $1,189 AUD

So what do you think about this custom build?

I saw prebuild advertisement from facebook, they are selling 3060 set up for $1700, however I prefer custom build. https://www.alliedgamingpc.com.au/allied-stinger-i-ready-to-ship-gaming-pc-core-i5-10400f-rtx-3060-ti-8gb/?msclkid=63238a0fba2711ecb1739fc78e039a32

You can get 2 TB Seagate Barracuda HDD for same money, 500 GB HDD is literally nothing these days.
I would spend $100 more and go with GTX 1660 Super instead of GTX 1650, considerably better card that will last longer.

can get a cheaper board and ram

larger ssd, 500g is ok, but 1tb dont cost much more
for a browser/gaming pc you will rarely notice any difference between a fast nvme ssd and sata ssd

hdd, avoid any slower than 7200rpm
4tb is spendy, get a 2tb, and add another if/when you need more space

id go for a 650-750w psu for newer builds to allow for a higher tdp cpu/gpu in the future

I think better to remove HDD, and upgrade the SSD for more space.

If your case has enough space, I'd avoid low profile GPU.
It seems less choice, less performance and more cost in general.

Corsair powersupplies are terrible, noisy hunks of garbage that historically are pretty much guaranteed to develop coil whine in every other unit. There's discrepancies between the pcpartpicker list and what you've listed in the post, but even at $149 AUD it is a terrible option.

The Seasonic Focus GX 850W comes in at the same price, is a far better performer and will last you through to your next upgrade if we're keeping price parity, but there is the option to save $100 to put towards a better GPU like a 1660 Super by opting for a sensible 500W PSU.

Mechanical drives like a WD Blue are abysmally slow for anything but archival type storage. Nothing strictly wrong with that if data hoarding is your target, but they are not pleasant to use if you plan on using it for tasks that require random reads/writes. Opting for a 970 EVO for an OS drive is a good choice, but I would consider swapping that WD Blue out for a cheaper QLC NVME like a 1TB Sabrent Rocket Q for general storage which will make all file operations exponentially more snappy. Mechanical archival type storage can always be added later down the line once you need it, and with how slow mechanical storage is even external connections over USB3 aren't going to be significantly bottlenecked.

A quick look ( very quick ) at that motherboard and it says dual NVME slots.

I would in all seriousness look at the larger 1 gb version.

I just popped in another 1gb into my motherboard that has three such slots.

It's up to you but check out PC case gear they had a sale on and I bought said a few weeks ago albeit the pro version.

Honestly it will soon fill up and an awful lot of games these days run like poop on very fast HD drives.

Having the limited dual options will be important to make that decision now.

! thing to watch out for if you get a HDD, make sure its cmr not smr .
I would get an 11th gen CPU. You get more features, especially since you opted for b560.

You get pcie 4.0 and a decoupled memory controller on the CPU that allows for super high-speed ram (gear 1 and 2). With 11th gen and b560 you can overclock without a K processor via the configurable TDP (cTDP).

Good to know. I did not know about this.

I should return unopened Seagate 14TB External drive.
It is most likely SMR.

I was wondering why one of my external drive is getting file corruptions.
It is Seagate 8TB External drive (STGY8000400) which I bought 14 month ago.

I thought I just got bad drive, but it seems I'm getting the SMR issue.
It is used over 50% of capacity already and getting lost folder and files.
