Gaming in Portrait Orientation
Has anyone ever tried to rotate your display 90 degrees and play 3D** games in a portrait (vertical) aspect ratio?

It should be as simple as setting the portrait orientation in the OS (Windows 7, in this case). 3D games are inherently able to render in any resolution and aspect ratio, even if many games (especially console ports) artificially limit the options for adjusting these parameters.

In short, I tried 3 or 4 games, and none of them would display properly. And the kicker was that each game had a different issue. I can't remember which games I tried, as this was a couple years ago, but I know that one was Condemned: Criminal Origins.

I know that it IS possible to do this -- either for a single display, or because one is tiling multiple displays -- and have it work for just about any game.

What is it that I did wrong?

** 3D, not stereoscopic. The term '3D' is unfortunately used to mean stereoscopy, but a 3D game is any game that has a three dimensional world and a virtual camera.

Depends on the game. Pinball FX for example has a mode for portrait mode. It does benefit from that though, unlike most other games.

play modern games on crt screen

Trust me -- I would if I could, but my last CRT stopped working in 2018.

But when I tried this, I used a 1600 x 900 LCD (so 900 x 1600 portrait mode).
