[solved] Is there a way to enable directplay without going through the Windows feature list (Win10)?

Yesterday I decided I wanted to play AOE3 on a different Computer than usual and installed the physical version on my Laptop. It failed to initialize and after some googling I found out that I need to turn on "directplay" (why is it even disabled by default?) but the only way I could find out how to do it was by going to the Conteol Panel and turning Windows features on/off, and when I tried it multiple times it was blank and didn't give me the list of features to enable/disable. Does anyone know if there's another way to enable it?

Reinstalling/upgrading Windows definitely sounds like a weekend thing. I don't know if one game is worth a reformat but I might try it if more things stop working.

The blank Windows Features dialog is a definite red flag of a broken Windows installation.

Yeah it's had a bunch of (what I thought were) minor issues since shortly after I bought it but I always intended to get it looked at by a local repair place some time in the future. If it doesn't work after I reinstall Windows from MS's website (which will definitely have to wait until at least tomorrow) I'll move it to a higher priority. I don't have anything really irreplaceable on here but I obviously don't want to reinstall several large games from Steam with my slow internet.

Just copy the Steam folder with games to a backup drive.
Copy it back when done doing a clean install of Win10 64bit 22H1 and all the latest Drivers.
Not only is DirectPlay enabled this way but you also need to enable NET / ASP Frameworks this way.
