Razer in 2018. Lord have mercy on my soul, that I'm even considering them.
For the last year I've been using an Xbox One Elite controller. It's now failed and needs to be replaced, and I'm left to choose between another Elite and a Razer Wildcat. And I'm reluctant to trust either brand.

Microsoft have lost my trust. After dismantling the failed Elite, I was unimpressed by the internals. It's horribly fragile, I'm actually surprised it lasted this long. Razer lost my trust eight years ago after a string of their products broke, but their Wildcat seems more rugged than the Elite. Having read a great many reviews, it's now the lead contender. Even though I know it's external build quality is somewhat rougher and less finessed.

I don't trust Razer. I've had terrible experiences in the past, but that was almost ten years ago and I'm willing to forgive, if it means getting the controller I want. How is their standard of quality control as of 2018, are they at least at a satisfactory level?

Were I to judge on past experience I would actually buy from Razer. Xbox 360 controllers were almost unkillable, but I've had a horrible time with the Xbox One models. I've had more of them break through overly flimsy design or lax quality control than I've had problems with Razer. Their strike-rate is lower.

Go with a playstation controller? I always found it far more comfortable and nicer to use.

Alas no. I've never found them confortable, I always got sore palm after about half an hour.
You've had the worst luck with your gear lately, Wolfey - sorry! As far as Razer goes, I've been extremely pleased with the quality and function of the Deathadder Elite the past 18 months. Still works just as well as when it was new and remains the most comfortable mouse I've used in nearly 20 years of tinkering around with PCs. I've only ever used Xbox controllers while PC gaming, but fortunately haven't had any issues.

I refuse to feel unlucky. I had a Water Pump fail without taking any system damage, and EK have replaced it without a fuss. That feels lucky to me, it could have been so much worse. And I got very lucky with my CPU, it seems to be a really good one. Overclocks like a champ, I'm having no trouble hitting my targets at lower voltage than I'd budgeted.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear about the Mouse. I knew for Razer to have survived this long, they must've surely improved. No amount of fanboyism, street-cred or adveritising budget could've protected a company from the issues I had. I feel somewhat confident ordering the Wildcat, I suppose I can always return it.
MS 360 Controller or a Sony DS4; the rest are all junk
Wired Xbox 360 controller is most stable and reliable one that you can get for PC.
steam controller. if you can master it, your rank will increase above pc builder to just below game developer.
Only Razer products I have experience with are a DeathAdder and a Kraken usb for my kids. The DA still rocks, the Kraken has had both side adjusters gorilla-glued so they can't adjust any longer. I cringed a bit when he wanted a man-o-war to replace it, but he didn't like it so was glad to return.

The Wildcat looks decent enough, should work out well. Personally I use an XB360 wireless controller with the MS wireless usb adapter, was worth it since I have a few of those controllers lying around unused. Only one of them has a faulty stick (probably their weakest point) so that's for spare parts.

^This.

I have been using Xbox controller for years, and no problems, and I press some aggressive games for button mashing.

No, MS 360 is the only thing you should consider

The DS4 is infamous for extremely bad quality control and being relatively difficult to set up in PC games. I've had 2 of them fail on me within a month.

Razer is trash. I bought a Deathadder Elite once and it every time I would rest my hand on it a bit the shell would creek.
Idk about the elite but ive had an xbox one controller since launch day with no problems and now have the bluetooth version also with no problems id stick with one of those and maybe be a little less heavy handed with your hardware

The mass of your hand must be exponentially greater than a human's. Are you Iron Man?

XBOX controlelrs are not about the thickness btu the joysticks are not symetric as the PS controller.

A XBOX Controllerbrand I use for long time without issues: PDP
