Dell Latitude D630 Error
So I tried calling Dell tech support and they just won’t answer, so I thought I’d take to here for some help. Whenever I try to power on the laptop the powerlight will stay solid and the caps lock (the “A” icon with a lock around it) will be flashing continuously on the computer. Absolutely no other lights or anything will turn on, and after about 15 seconds it shuts off. Please help

Windows Not Booting
I had recently purchased a Windows xp laptop that was compatible with Windows 2000. After ordering a OEM unused copy of windows 2000, I installed it onto the system but whenever the laptop tries to boot from the HDD drive that I installed windows to, I’m greeted with a black screen and a white flashing “-“ in the top left corner. No matter how long I wait or what I do I can not get it to boot windows. I was able to run the Dell diagnostics program in the systems bios and it cameback with everything in working order. I’m not sure what to do. If anyone wants to know, the laptop is a Dell Latitude d630

A white flashing “-“ in the top left corner means that there is no drive to boot from.

Go into the BIOS and select the bootable drive with Win2k on it.

Windows Black Screen
I bought a Dell Latitude D630 laptop with Windows XP installed yesterday and I wanted to install my OEM copy of Windows 2000 onto the system (the laptop is supposed to be compatible with Windows 2000 and Dell still has the drivers available on their website). I did everything accordingly and no matter what else I do, after the CD installation is done and the computer tries to boot from the HDD drive I installed Windows 2000 to, all I get is a black screen with a white flashing “-“ in the top left corner. Any help would be appreciated.

That would suggest that your bootable drive is in fact, not bootable, It must be formatted as a bootable drive to be so. If its your os drive then your system is not recognising it, if its a hard drive is it correctly inserted? Try and get into bios and configure machine, you said that f12 is not working to get into bios. I believe that a change to setup will force bios setup by default, remove memory chip from underneath, machine will detect change and give you bios option. (if it does not start because it has no memory put it back, it should still register a change).

What sometimes works, remove hdd and boot from other media. If the machine boots shut down and reinstall the hdd and start normally.
